For our activities in ESAC, we are currently seeking a System Software Engineer for Science Operations. Tasks System engineering and architectural design activities, including operating plans and procedures Designing, developing, implementing, testing, deploying, operating and maintaining software tools and systems, e.g. o Observation proposal handling, mission planning and quicklook systems, parts of which may be distributed to the community, o User support tools, o Interactive analysis and calibration systems, to be distributed as needed to the community for data reduction and analysis, o Data processing pipelines, o Contribute to the definition of Interface Control Documents ICDs and file interchange formats with external coordination units, o Contribute to the maintenance of the overall system, including configuration control and versioning, o Organise and perform end to end system testing with the scientific communities, o Scientific data archives and interfacing these to the virtual observatory, o Scientific and technical WWW systems to support Science Operations Centre, Science Ground Segment and the scientific community. Qualifications and Requirements Knowledge is required in system and software engineering practices Knowledge in the corresponding software development language, database systems Knowledge is required in ECSS standards for software development. For our activities in EUMETSAT, we are currently looking for an AIX System Software Engineer. Tasks As a member of the Computer Systems Management team, the key person shall provide support to all Ground Segment Commissioning and Routine Operations. The duties range from the support to the operation of the UNIXbased ground segment facilities, to the analysis, design, development, testing and maintenance of distributed hardware and system software platforms. This includes the settingup and implementation of maintenance policies and procedures, the support to the procurement of hardware and software, and the co ordination with external providers of maintenance services. The key person shall perform the following tasks installation and configuration of operating system and other software, tuning of operating systems parameters to optimize performance analysis, planning and performance of HW and SW upgrades or reconfigurations, taking care of compatibility issues between subsystems monitoring of the system performance, investigation into HW and system SW problems and performance of the relevant corrective actions ensuring that in case of HW or system SW failures the operational configuration can be restored, including the definition, maintenance, performance of backup procedures liaison with the external providers of HW and system SW maintenance for the request and follow up of maintenance interventions administration and installation of databases administration of user accounts support to SW development and maintenance in relation to the utilization of system resources implementation and maintenance of scripts andor procedures where applicable for the automated andor controlled execution of the above activities, generation or update of technical documentation in relation to system upgrades provision of standbyoncall support provision of support, as required, to critical operations. In the performance of the activities the key person shall apply the relevant change control and maintenance procedures. The main location of work is the EUMETSAT Headquarters in Darmstadt, Germany. Travel within Europe, or even worldwide might be required for some tasks and will also be identified in the corresponding work package. Concerning working hours, two types of support are required from the key person normal support standby callout support specified in advance on a workpackage basis. Qualifications and Requirements In addition to having a university degree or equivalent, the key person shall have extensive experience in the administration and troubleshooting of distributed systems. The experience should have been made in an operational or production environment, characterized by custom applications in addition to standard software, running both on the client and server side, and by high availability requirements. The key person shall have an expert knowledge and a significant work experience of the UNIX operating systems, and should be familiar, to the extent required by the performance of the above tasks, with as many as possible of the following system software environments on IBM Systems AIX 6.1 7.1 on IBM pSeries, Bladecenters and PureFlex Systems very good experience on IBM virtualization, including MicroPartitioning, LPAR, VIOS Administration and configuration of IBM pSeries, Bladecenters and PureFlex Systems using HMC and AMM high availability software IBM PowerHA and cluster file system GPFS Ability to perform endtoend system changes from requirements to testing and documentation Good experience with the monitoring tool Nagios Ability to write technical documentation in English Experience in the installation, administration and troubleshooting on some of the following shall be considered as an advantage SUN HW Solaris DELL HW Linux RAID arrays EMC SAN Brocade Backup and recovery systems IBM certifications It is also an advantage if the key person can carry out basic hardware support like installing interface cards or physically setting up networks. The variety of the tasks and the scope of the systems to be supported require a high degree of autonomy and good analytical skills together with the ability to effectively cooperate within the team and with internal customers. The official languages of EUMETSAT are English and French. The working language for the position is English and therefore the key person must be able to work effectively in this language and have knowledge of the other, together with good communication skills.
