Software and System Engineering Consultancy Support 1313107 Job Description The Key Person shall be responsible for software and system engineering tasks. In this area of work, the tasks will typically include Analysis of the operational requirements for the EARS EUMETSAT Advanced Retransmission Service services Support to the definition and integration of the data handling and product processing systems for the new EARS services Technical liaison with the international partners providing the software packages for product processing of the satellite instrument data, including identification of test data and test environment Architectural and detailed design, implementation, testing and support of the EARS related software and applications Support the delivery of software externally developed, its installation, configuration and testing Support to the coordination and definition of technical interfaces with the external partners and service providers supporting EARS Support to the definition of EARS system evolution activities. Coordination of their implementation with relevant EUMETSAT teams and external partners Preparation of design documentation and other relevant documentation Verification and validation of software and systems, including the preparation of test plans, test procedures, test data and test tools Support to the configuration management of the EARS systems Support to the maintenance and evolution of the operational EARS system, in particular in response to the availability of new versions of the operational product processing packages and other key software packages Preparation, validation and maintenance of EARS maintenance and operational procedures and technical documentation Preparation and production of routine reports as necessary Furthermore, the Key Person shall provide support to the operations of the EARS services. In this area of work the tasks will typically include Support the coordination and announcement of system changes to the operational system with the relevant teams in Operations and Services to Users Department and the Technical and Scientific Support Department. When relevant raise, investigate and coordinate the resolution of anomalies with appropriate modifications or developments Provide support and guidance to the relevant teams in the Operations and Services to Users Department, in particular regarding system operations and product processing aspects When relevant, provide User Service with information required by Users about services, including documentation and replies to User queries. Required Skills and Experience University degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline. Experience of software development, operation or maintenance in real time systems, objectoriented design methodology and be very familiar with software development standards. Significant work experience in the Linux and UNIX SVR4 SUN Solaris, IBM AIX Operating System environments, and should be familiar, to the extent required by the performance of the above tasks, with networking, distributed applications, TCPIP services and Web services. At least 3 years of experience with design, development and integration of operational ground systems providing 24 x 7 services In depth knowledge of and experience with the Java programming language In depth knowledge of Linux operating system scripting languages, preferable PERL, KSHCSH and bash In depth knowledge of XML In depth knowledge of the development and maintenance of web interfaces and services using Tomcat and Apache in a UNIX environment Source Code control system, preferably SubVersion Configuration Control Formalised Software Testing System verification and validation The ability to adapt to a rapidly changing environment and obtain a system overview. Good communications skills, to allow the effective communication of information under a variety of circumstances. SheHe should be used to working proactively within a small team, being able to work with the minimum of supervision. The variety of the tasks and the scope and complexity of the systems to be supported require a high degree of autonomy and good analytical skills. The ability to perform under very high workloads and adapt to a rapidly changing environment is essential, conducting all activities in an orderly and disciplined manner and working calmly and correctly under stress. The work will be released in individual work packages based on rolling wave resource plans and related project plans. For one of our main customers, we are currently looking for a System Software Engineer, who will give support to Science operations. Support is being requested from industry to a wide variety of activities in science operations, including Interactions with the wide scientific community e.g. to prepare user support documentation, to gather details of scientific research programmes, to distribute data and software for data reduction activities, to provide support for exploitation of mission, helpdesk, etc., including development, test, deployment and, as necessary, distribution of the appropriate software tools, Interactions with instrument producers e.g. regarding instrument observing modes, calibration aspects, etc, Interactions with the Mission Operations Centre e.g. for interfaces between payload and platform, for celestial constraints, etc, Preparing timelines for scientific payload operations, including development, test, deployment and use of the appropriate software tools, Payload operations including command generation and verification, state of health, quick look data monitoring, calibration, etc, including appropriate software tools, and procedures, Data processing, distribution and archiving including development, test and distribution of interactive analysis systems development, test, deployment and operation of pipeline processing systems development, test, deployment and operations of archive systems, etc. Tasks and Responsibilities The employee shall provide support in developing science operations systems and tools, including System engineering and architectural design activities, including operating plans and procedures Designing, developing, implementing, testing, deploying, operating and maintaining software tools and systems, e.g. observation proposal handling, mission planning and quicklook systems, parts of which may be distributed to the community, user support tools, interactive analysis and calibration systems, to be distributed as needed to the community for data reduction and analysis, data processing pipelines, Scientific data archives and interfacing these to the virtual observatory. Experience and education Masters in computing or equivalent University degree from a recognized Institution, with a least 4 years of relevant experience Good knowledge of Java and EclipseSQL JavaScript XML Oracle MySQL Linux and Windows. High level of initiate autonomy, and professional maturity that is required to carry out complex tasks and high level of responsibility Proficient in the English language, both written and spoken. Sound and proven experience in science operations. Reliability, rigor and initiative in the execution of the assigned work.
