South Korea's FTC approves SK, broadcasters OTT venture

(Telecompaper) South Korea's Fair Trade Commission (FTC) approved the merger between OTT services Oksusu, under SK Telecom, and Pooq, jointly owned by broadcasters KBS, MBC and SBS, according to local paper Korea Joongang Daily. However, the approval is subject to conditions that will last for three years to ensure fair competition.

(Telecompaper) The mediasector made a further recovery from previous losses. The Telecompaper Stock Index Global Consumer Media ended week 25 up 1.5 percent, ahead of the S&P 500 (+0.5%). McClatchy made the biggest recovery, up 18 percent for the week. Other winners included Salem Media and Stingray, both up 13 percent. Lions Gate was the biggest loser, down 13 percent. KKR, in accordance with earlier rumours, placed an offer for Axel Springer (+11%).

(Telecompaper) Walt Disney once more dominated the news in the global media market. The Telecompaper Stock Index (TPSI) Global Consumer Media performed in line (-2.1%) with the S&P 500 index (-2.2%) in week 19. Other news was mostly earnings and streaming video related. ITV, Snap and McClathcy all lost 11 percent, whereas Sinclair Broadcast was the week's biggest winner with a gain of no less than 38 percent. This puts Sinclair easily on top in the year-to-date view, gaining 135 percent. Snap, winning 90 percent, nearly doubled from the end of 2018.

SK Telecom partners with Korean broadcasters to develop business on 5G

SK Telecom (NYSE:SKM) has signed an MOU with SBS. SK Telecom now has MOUs with the top three terrestrial TV broadcasting stations in Korea, namely KBS, MBC and SBS. SK Telecom will work with each partner to develop solutions and business models based on 5G.
