Remote Sensing Scientist Ocean Colour

EUMETSAT is Europes meteorological satellite agency monitoring the weather and climate from space 24 hours a day, 365 days a year We are currently looking for an experienced Remote Sensing Scientist to join our international team of dynamic and inspiring engineers and industry professionals based in Darmstadt, Germany, tasked with driving innovation within the Space, Satellite and Earth Observation sector. This role is rooted in the mission of EUMETSAT and will provide the opportunity to work with leading IT, Space and Earth Observation organisations and domain experts to make a positive impact on society! BACKGROUND Under a Copernicusdedicated programme, EUMETSAT operates four Copernicus Sentinel missions on behalf of the European Union, including the Sentinel3 mission dedicated to monitoring of ocean colour, sea surface temperature and ocean surface topography. In addition, Meteosat Third Generation MTG and the EUMETSAT Polar System of Second Generation EPSSG, the next generation EUMETSAT satellite systems to be deployed in the next five years have some ocean colour observation capability. As a member of the Marine Applications Competence Area of the Remote Sensing and Products RSP Division, the Remote Sensing Scientist Ocean Colour will support the definition, prototyping, implementation, validation and evolution of operational ocean colour products, focusing on Sentinel3. DUTIES Support the prototyping and operational implementation of advanced algorithms for improved and new marine ocean colour products from the Copernicus Sentinel3 and other EUMETSAT missions Provide product quality analysis and longterm quality monitoring of operational ocean colour products at EUMETSAT Plan, develop and perform ocean colour product calibration and validation activities, including the development of tools and methodologies for validation with Fiducial Reference Measurements and insitu data Support Sentinel3 mission operations with respect to processing anomalies, change requests, new processing baselines, and baseline regression testing Support the ocean colour product recalibration and reprocessing activities as required Maintain an in depth understanding of the observational capabilities of spaceborne ocean colour instrument Play an active role in relevant operational and scientific interactions with the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service and the ocean colour user communities Support and manage external studies relevant for the development of new or improved productsparametersconcepts. JavaScript is an advantage Proficiency with scientific algorithm prototyping in IDL andor MATLAB Demonstrable experience with scientific development projects and working with ocean colour researchers and user communities Strengths in analysis, synthesis and presentation, coupled with good interpersonal skills and a proven ability to apply these to the interactions within and between teams. QUALIFICATIONS An advanced university degree or equivalent in remote sensing, physics, oceanography or another relevant discipline is required. LANGUAGE EUMETSAT is an international organisation with a working language of English. German language is not required to work here. The University of Potsdam, Faculty of Science, Institute of Geosciences, together with the Institute for Environmental Science and Geography, hereby announces a joint professorship under the Julich Model with the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences to be filled as soon as possible Full Professorship W 3 for Remote Sensing in Geo Environmental Sciences and GFZ Section Head position The successful candidate shall have an outstanding internationally recognized scientific record in the field of Remote Sensing of Earth Surface Processes and Properties. HeShe will drive the development of remote sensing sensor technologies and analysis methods in close connection with geoscience and environmental research matter fluxes, water and carbon cycles, natural hazards, land degradation, mineral resources. Applicants should avail of leadership skills in optical remote sensing with a focus on imaging spectroscopy. Additional expertise in further domains e. g. radar remote sensing, multisensor approaches is highly desired. The candidate will also support the transfer of innovative technologies to social and commercial use. At the GFZ, the appointee will lead a large research group Section 1.4, Remote Sensing and Geoinformatics with more than 40 colleagues that is involved in substantial international networks e. g. hyperspectral EnMAP Mission. We are seeking a candidate who unites an outstanding research record of international stature with leadership skills as well as vision, experience, and enthusiasm to build on and expand the current strengths of remote sensing research at the GFZ. Strong management proficiency, experience in working with interdisciplinary teams, knowhow in promoting the careers of young scholars, and a familyfriendly management style complete the profile. At the University, the Professor will have teaching responsibilities of 2 hours per week per semester 2 SWS in the M.Sc. degree program Remote Sensing, geoInformation and Visualization, and the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degree programs Geoecology and Geosciences Courses will be given in German and in English.
