EUMETSAT is Europes meteorological satellite agency monitoring the weather and climate from space 24 hours a day, 365 days a year EUMETSAT is an international organisation employing staff from across all 30 member states and this role is being advertised on multiple international job boards, but please note that this role would be based in Darmstadt, Germany and would require international applicants to relocate if successful. We are currently looking for an experienced Remote Sensing Scientist with extensive experience working with atmospheric remote sensing lidars, to join our international team of young and inspiring engineers and industry professionals, tasked with driving innovation within the Space, Satellite and Earth Observation sector. This role is routed in the mission of EUMETSAT and will provide the opportunity to work with leading IT, Space and Earth Observation organisations and domain experts to make a positive impact on society! The Remote Sensing Scientist Doppler Wind Lidar DWL is responsible for the development, maintenance, verification, validation, and monitoring of products related to space borne Doppler Wind Lidar. The post holder shall follow the scientific developments of spaceborne Doppler Wind Lidar systems and develop products and supporting tools that shall contribute to the NearReal Time NRT assimilation in Numerical Weather Prediction NWP models, actively interact with operational and scientific research communities, and lead the product improvements considering opportunities and new requirements. This position is located within the Remote Sensing and Products RSP Division, which is tasked with providing the scientific expertise required to develop, implement, validate, maintain and evolve the operational observational products from all EUMETSAT satellites and agreed third party missions for example Copernicus Sentinel3 and Sentinel6, as well as establishing the user requirements for future EUMETSAT satellite programmes. What youll be doing Lead the Doppler Wind Lidar mission enduser requirements definition process at EUMETSAT, including the analysis of requirements, the preparation of the enduser requirements related documentation for EUMETSAT Member States, organisation of enduser consultations, etc. Provide scientific support to program and instrument development activities in the preparation of Doppler Wind Lidar mission Lead the algorithm development, calibration, verification and validation of Level1 and potentially also Level2 products extracted from Doppler Wind Lidar missions Develop and maintain prototype processing software implementing algorithms for the extraction of new andor improved products Support the operational implementation of newimproved products in the relevant operational ground segments, making use of the existing contracted services Lead the overall instrument CalVal activities, including the inorbit commissioning and longterm mission performance Actively interact and cooperate with the operational Numerical Weather Prediction NWP user community in order to understand requirements for new or improved products and their intended applications Cooperate with the science community and international partners, and conduct or manage scientific studies aimed at evaluating candidate algorithms for the extraction of new or improved products What we offer Excellent salary, of up to Euro 7,500 month NET after tax based on skills and experience Flexible working time including additional flexileave Private medical coverage for employee and family Attractive final salary pension 30 days of annual leave 14.5 days public holidays Training and development support Relocation allowance and support if applicable Requirements Qualifications Advanced university degree in meteorology, atmospheric physics, physical remote sensing, or equivalent. Skills and Experience Indepth knowledge of remote sensing physics in the atmosphere with extensive experience working with atmospheric remote sensing lidars Demonstrated experience in development of advanced lidar algorithms and applications Demonstrated experience in developing scientific application software and analysis tools Experience in working with atmospheric and meteorological user communities and researchers. Working experience with the assimilation of satellite wind products in Numerical Weather Prediction models NWP would be an asset Excellent mathematical, problem solving, analysis, synthesis and presentation skills Strong technical writing and presentation skills Strong interpersonal skills, teamorientation and the ability to work in a matrix structure. BACKGROUND Image Navigation, Registration and Calibration INRC is a critical function for achieving targeted performances in the processing of Earth observation satellite data. This builds on in depth scientific understanding of specific design features of spacecraft and instruments e.g. pointing, geometric, radiometric and multispectral performances and of the use of external elements e.g. selected natural observation targets to improve over intrinsic performances of instruments and achieve Level 1 products of suitable geometric and radiometric quality. These two Remote Sensing Scientists Instrument Navigation, Registration and Calibration, will provide scientific expertise on relevant INRC algorithms, support the development of new ones, monitor the quality of operational Level1 image products and support the commissioning of new imaging missions e.g. Meteosat Third Generation, EPSSecond Generation and Copernicus Sentinel345. From low Earth and geostationary orbits. One post will focus on geometric processing, navigation, and geometric image quality, and the second on radiometric processing, instrument calibration, and radiometric image quality. DUTIES Support algorithm development for Level1 data processing chains of current and future imaging missions and the commissioning and maintenance of these chains Support the monitoring of image quality and calibration of the generated Level1 image products for both low Earth LEO and geostationary GEO orbit systems, including the development of stateofart tools for analysis Develop and maintain prototype software, in particular geometric and radiometric processing algorithms, in order to improve the operational implementations of Level1 processing across low Earth and geostationary orbit missions Support the development, procurement, and operations of tools to monitor Level1 calibration and product quality Support the verification, validation and support during the initial operations phase of the Level1 data processing systems including commissioning, the initial focus being on the MTG and EPSSG missions As a member of multidisciplinary Instrument Functional Chain teams, interact and cooperate with other scientists and instrument system engineers to optimise the design, development, performance and commissioning of endtoend instrument chains from sensing to Level 1 products Support interactions with ESA, other development partners and contractors responsible for the development of satellites and instruments to appropriate the required instrument knowledge Interact with the Operations team to optimise the performances during exploitation Initiate and lead relevant scientifictechnical studies, including the management of external support contracts. What we offer Excellent salary, of up to Euro 7,500 month NET after tax and deductions based on skills and experience Flexible working time including additional flexileave Full medical coverage for employee and family Attractive final salary pension 30 days of annual leave 14.5 days public holidays Training and development support Relocation allowance and support if applicable SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE In depth scientific andor engineering knowledge of the use and development of geometric andor radiometric remote sensing algorithms for Level1 instrument data processing Demonstrated knowledge of instrument calibration and validation methods, including continuous quality monitoring of satellite products Fluency in a highlevel programming language is important preferable C, C, or Python in UNIX environments, including the usage of parallel processing Experience with scientific applications and analysis tools e.g. MATLAB or IDL Experience with collaborative projects covering research and development work in an operational environment is an advantage Excellent problem solving, analysis, synthesis, and presentation skills and quality orientation A demonstrable learning orientation and the willingness to expand own knowledgeskills Good interpersonal skills and a proven ability to apply these to interactions within a team and between teams. QUALIFICATIONS An advanced university degree or equivalent in remote sensing, physics or another relevant discipline is required. LANGUAGE EUMETSAT is an international organisation with a working language of English. German language is not required to work here.
