Proposed ASTM Standard addresses crumb-rubber infill in turf.

ASTM International Committee F08 on Sports Equipment, Playing Surfaces and Facilities is developing WK47821, Specification for Extractable Hazardous Metals in Synthetic Turf Infill Materials. Proposed standard measures properties of crumb rubber infill that could be ingested by players on artificial turfs. Test method simulates infill coming in contact with stomach acid for a period of time, and then measures presence of soluble elements in parts-per-million.

ASTM Fences Committee names John Eichenlaub as new chairman.

John Eichenlaub, chief operating officer at Builders Fence Company, Inc. (Sun Valley, CA), will serve as chairman of ASTM International Committee F14 on Fences. In addition to having been ASTM International and F14 member since 2008, Eichenlaub has been with Builders Fence Company, Inc. since 2015. He previously served as technical services coordinator and product manager at Atkore International and also served as aviation electronics technician in U.S. Navy.

NIST Makes Statement on ASTM Standard E2329-14.

On January 11, 2016, OSAC Forensic Science Standards Board (FSSB) voted to elevate ASTM Standard E2329-14, Standard Practice for Identification of Seized Drugs, to OSAC Registry of Approved Standards. Concerns have been raised that language in said standard is not scientifically rigorous; NIST and FSSB independently asked ASTM to review included language. To respond to concerns, ASTM listed standard as "Under Revision."

ASTM President James Thomas will receive Ronald H. Brown award.

James A. Thomas, ASTM International president, ANSI Board of Directors member, and proponent of voluntary standards development, has been selected as 2016 recipient of Ronald H. Brown Standards Leadership Award. Thomas will be honored during U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day, which will be held October 27, 2016 in Washington, DC. He was nominated for numerous contributions to standards development and proactive support of U.S. standardization system throughout his 40-year career.
