ASTM Standard defines sustainable manufacturing terminology.

ASTM standard E2987/E2987M, Terminology for Sustainable Manufacturing, will help members of ASTM's Subcommittee on Sustainable Manufacturing revise standards and develop new ones. While subcommittee E60.13 already published guide for evaluating environmental aspects of sustainability of manufacturing processes, several more proposed standards are in development on topics ranging from supply-chain sustainability to waste classification. These and other efforts will benefit from E2987.

From April 3–14, ASTM International and International Code Council (ICC) will host officials from Gulf Cooperation Council Standardization Organization (GSO). Delegation, while visiting Pennsylvania, NYC, Chicago, and San Antonio, will visit agency offices and receive training on various topics, meet with local engineering firms and manufacturers, visit local government agencies responsible for code enforcement, participate in committee meetings, and visit Southwest Research Institute.

Standard E3050, Specification for Denatured Ethanol for Use as Cooking and Appliance Fuel, supports introduction of ethanol as cooking fuel. To help those in developing countries access and use safer alternative to wood, charcoal, and other traditional fuels, standard will indirectly support buying, selling, and transport of ethanol worldwide while also acting as benchmark for further quality control in countries where ethanol is being used.

New ASTM Small-Plane Standards help with handling and icing.

Approved by ASTM International's Committee on General Aviation Aircraft (F44), 2 new standards cover handling characteristics and icing protection. Specification for Handling Characteristics of Aeroplanes (F3173/F3173M) establishes airworthiness design standards for general handling characteristics in flight, on ground, and on water, while Specification for Icing Protection for Small Airplanes (F3120/F3120M) gives manufacturers defined path to meet regulatory requirements.

New ASTM Standard helps ensure wire bonding quality in concrete.

To enhance specification in purchases as well as standardized testing, Test Method for Evaluating the Bond Quality of Steel Wire for Concrete Reinforcement will be published as A1096. This standard will help establish acceptable bond range corresponding to specific needs of prestressed concrete manufacturers that use steel wires in their products. Test described in A1096 is based on ASTM standard A1081, Test Method for Evaluating Bond of Seven-Wire Steel Prestressing Strand.
