ASTM Honors Michael Gold for work on nonferrous metals standards.

ASTM International Committee B02 on Nonferrous Metals and Alloys presented Gary M. Kralik Distinguished Service Award to consultant Michael Gold of Gold Metallurgical Services LLC (North Benton, OH). Specifically, committee noted Gold's service as member (since 1979) as well as key contributions to Subcommittee on Refined Nickel and Cobalt and Their Alloys (B02.07). Gold is also active on Committee A01 on Steel, Stainless Steel, and Related Alloys.

ASTM Fatigue and Fracture Committee honors Dr. Craig McClung.

ASTM Committee E08 on Fatigue and Fracture honored R. Craig McClung, PhD, with Coffin-Manson Fatigue Achievement Award. ASTM member since 1990, McClung serves as member-at-large on E08 executive subcommittee. McClung's career has focused on research and program management in fatigue and fracture, including both detailed scientific studies of basic phenomena and development of robust engineering models and software for structural life prediction.

ASTM Test Method helps reduce asphaltenes in oil production.

D7996, Test Method for Measuring Visible Spectrum of Asphaltenes in Heavy Fuel Oils and Crude Oils by Spectroscopy in a Microfluidic Platform, will help to quickly detect contaminants in variety of petroleum products. Standard will cover gas oil, diesel fuel, fuel oils, residual fuel oils, lubricating oil, and bitumen, as well as crude oil that uses microfluidics and spectrographic techniques. Using the standard could reduce remediation costs and improve efficiency.

ASTM Smart Manufacturing Journal is accepting submissions.

ASTM International's newest journal, Smart and Sustainable Manufacturing Systems (SSMS), is currently accepting papers. Due to launch in January 2017, this journal will be managed by SSMS Editor-in-Chief Dr. Sudarsan Rachuri. Topics of interest for papers include those "at the intersection of manufacturing science, information science and data science,” as noted by Rachuri. Research papers, industry case studies, industry application papers, survey papers, and technical notes are welcome.

ASTM Standard covers testing for crossarms.

ASTM has released D8019, Test Methods for Determining the Full Section Flexural Modulus and Bending Strength of Fiber Reinforced Polymer Crossarms Assembled with Center Mount Brackets. Standard will help determine important attributes for polymer crossarms that are an integral part of electrical distribution structures. Experts can use standard to establish design and strength criteria that can be used throughout engineering community.
