Officials say it may cost as much as $250,000 to clean up a Shiawassee County oil spill that left multiple dead geese and nearly 100 tons of polluted earth in its wake. A Michigan Department of Environmental Quality analyst said Wednesday, Dec. 9, as much as 1,000 gallons of used motor oil may have spilled into a county drain just west of the Shiawassee River.

On December 3, House of Representatives passed North American Energy Security and Infrastructure Act of 2015 (HR 8). Senate will vote on similar legislation, Energy Policy Modernization Act of 2015 (S 2012), in 2016. House legislation includes NEMA-supported language directing DoE to develop a plan to establish Strategic Transformer Reserve as well as also clarifications to Energy Policy and Conservation Act. These and other aspects will benefit consumers, industry, and government.

NEMA welcomed passage of Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act, which supports wider deployment of intelligent transportation systems and electric vehicle charging systems on nation’s highways, addresses need to move freight more efficiently, reauthorizes federal Export-Import Bank, and takes steps to improve security of the electrical infrastructure. Core provision is a 5-year authorization of federal surface transportation programs, including highways, rail, and transit.
