For our activities in EUMETSAT, we are currently looking for an UNIX System Software Engineer. As a member of the Computer Systems Management CSM team, the key person will provide support to the development and maintenance of the TCE Technical Computing Environment. The tasks will be carried out mainly at EUMETSAT facilities in Darmstadt, but travel within Europe may be required for certain activities. Tasks The duties range from the support to the operation of the TCE, to the analysis, design, development, testing and maintenance of distributed hardware and system software platforms. This includes the settingup and implementation of maintenance policies and procedures, the support to the procurement of hardware and software, and the coordination with external providers of maintenance services. The key person shall perform the following tasks Installation and configuration of operating system and other software, tuning of operating systems parameters to optimise performance Analysis, planning and carrying out of HW and SW upgrades or reconfigurations, taking care of compatibility issues between subsystems Monitoring of the system performance, investigation into HW and system SW problems and carrying out the relevant corrective actions Provision of firstlevel support to the users of the system Ensuring that in case of HW or system SW failures the operational configuration can be restored, including the definition, maintenance, carrying out of backup procedures Coordination with shared infrastructures, e.g. networks, storage network infrastructure SNI, for operations and maintenance Liaison with the external providers of HW and system SW maintenance for the request and follow up of maintenance interventions Administration and installation of databases Administration of user accounts Support to SW development and maintenance in relation to the utilisation of system resources Implementation and maintenance of scripts andor procedures where applicable for the automated andor controlled execution of the above activities, generation or update of technical documentation in relation to system upgrades Provision of standbyoncall support if needed under special circumstances Provision of support, as required, to critical operations. In the performance of the activities the Key person shall apply the relevant change control and maintenance procedures. Qualifications and Requirements Essential In addition to having a university degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline, the key person shall have extensive experience in the administration and troubleshooting of distributed systems. The experience should have been made in an operational or production environment, characterised by custom applications in addition to standard software, running both on the client and server side, and by high availability requirements. The key person shall have an expert knowledge and a significant work experience of the UNIX operating systems, and should be familiar, to the extent required by the performance of the above tasks. It is mandatory for this position that the key person has knowledge of the following On IBM computers AIX, configuration of pseries servers, GPFS, TSM backup, NIM On DELLIBM x64 computers SuSE Linux andor RedHat Linux Virtualisation based on VMWare products Network based on Ethernet SAN technology TCPIP internetworking and the related network protocols and applications, e.g. NIS, NFS, DNS, SNMP, FTP. Desirable Experience in some of the following areas shall be considered as an advantage Installation and maintenance of ORACLE databases Maintenance of an Online Documentation system FirstSecond Level user support Automatic Service Provisioning using Cloud technologies MC RAID arrays and virtual appliances On Sun computers Solaris operating systems It is also an advantage if the key person can carry out basic hardware support like installing interface cards or physically setting up networks The variety of the tasks and the scope of the systems to be supported require a high degree of autonomy and good analytical skills Because of the special support role good communications skills and stress resistance are essential for the job. The official languages of EUMETSAT are English and French. The working language for the position is English and therefore the key person must be able to work effectively in this language. Tasks The key person will have the following main tasks Participating to project reviews, meetings, and Software Review Boards Preparing design tradeoffs, analyses and reports using metrics to support project decisions Participating to software product evaluations and process assessments Monitoring the execution of the PA Plan Assisting the Ground SegmentProject Manager in the identification and resolution of problems with respect to Quality Ensuring support the definition of PA requirements and plans in accordance with Directorate policies and to ensure the implementation of agreed procedures Reviewing the tailoring measures of applicable standards reflected in the Software Project Management Plan Reviewing the Software Quality Assurance Plan issued for the subsystems Witnessing the provisional and final acceptance tests in order to recommend the formal release of software for operational use Monitoring that all PA documentation and records related to the contracted work are maintained Performing, where required project internal and suppliers quality audits relating to the scope of the project Identifying and help to resolve problems that may represent an unacceptable risk to Product Quality Attending Review Boards as applicable Organizing the review and approval of project quality related documentation Reviewing and approval of changes to project quality related documentation Facilitating the implementation of risk management within the project team Contributing to the disposition of nonconformances, anomalies and problems Defining the composition, call and chair the Nonconformance Review Board NRB Initiating the marking, segregation as applicable and further treatment of failed items Ensuring the proper filing and documentation process of NCRs Initiating the nonconformance correction Performing the closeout procedure of the NCRs Managing, update and issue the Configuration Item Status Report Maintaining a configuration management database with change report mechanisms being put in place essential during system freeze Ensuring that there is a good configuration control mechanism being followed in all software hardware being used and monitoring the applicable subcontractorssubsystems and Ground Stations to ensure these practices are being followed Preparing and maintaining the configuration management plan. Qualifications and Requirements Masters degree in software engineering or computer science with background on space engineering 10 years of relevant professional work experience Familiarity with space product assurance practices together with a good working knowledge of appropriate working tools Practical experience in applying ECSS SW standards. Knowledge and proven experience in the following areas o Configuration management of complex systems o Software engineering and PA in critical applications. Good interpersonal skills Good written and oral English Ability to participate and chair meetings with multinational environment Ability to work in a matrix oriented organisation reporting to both Project PA responsible and the functional PA organisation without continuous supervision.
