Researchers say less Arctic sea ice means more precipitation

2015-12-22 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Associated Press: A research paper published Monday by U.S. and Canadian scientists says less sea ice in the Arctic has meant more precipitation is falling. Lead author Ben Kopec, of Dartmouth College, says researchers looked at 20 years of precipitation data at sites in the Canadian Arctic and the Greenland Sea. They measured isotope compositions to determine whether moisture originated in the Arctic or from lower latitudes. They found that as sea ice diminished, more precipitation fell and more came from Arctic...

A million years ago, Greenland was ice free

2015-12-20 16:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Environmental News Network: As the Arctic warms, Greenlands fringe of glaciers is thinning and meltingbut the future of the Greenland ice sheet remains a giant question mark. Until recently, that was also true of the ice sheets past: Scientists have long debated whether it might have shrunk away to nothing during Earths warmest periods. Now, a new study suggests that Greenland was entirely ice free at some point in the last 1.25 million years. We should be worried about the Greenland Ice Sheet, says Joerg Schaefer, a...

New Method Unlocks Climate Change Secrets From Tibetan Ice

2015-12-18 17:26:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Eurasia Review: Identifying forest fire molecules in the Tibetan ice could give us an insight into how human activity is contributing to climate change and melting glaciers. A new study published in Talanta presents a method to help scientists identify forest fire molecules in Tibet. The researchers behind the new method, from the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research in China, say their work will enable scientists to spot the molecules produced by burning forests more easily. This will help them understand the...

Faster retreat of Greenland's ice sheet observed

2015-12-18 15:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Agence France-Presse: The Greenland ice sheet, a potentially massive contributor to land-encroaching sea-level rise, lost mass twice as fast between 2003 and 2010 as during the entire 20th century, researchers said on Wednesday. Greenland ice loss contributed to a global average sea level rise of 25mm between 1990 and 2010 - mainly from surface melt, said the research published in the journal Nature. The total mass lost was over 9 000 gigatons (about one billion tons). It was net loss, meaning the difference between...
