Job description For our customer, ESAESTEC, we are seeking a Space Systems Engineer to work at ESTEC in Noordwijk, The Netherlands. Responsibilities You will be assigned to a system engineering support contract with the ISS Programme and Exploration Dept. within ESAs Directorate of Human Spaceflight Robotic Exploration HRE. Today this includes missions such as the European participation of the International Space Station and the ExoMars mission which will put a rover on Mars in 2020. The focus of the job will be on the preparation of the future missions for example the next Mars missions after ExoMars. The initial focus of this activity will be working with the ESA team with the following duties Supporting the implementation of ESA internal and industrial system definition studies at Phase AB1 level, including associated technology studies for preparing future European activities and projects in the field of robotic exploration, addressing in particular future Mars Orbiter and Rover mission concepts. Support to preparation and implementation of study reviews with industryinternational partners and ESA internal entities Developing and maintaining keydriving System and Technical requirements document for future European development activities and studies for exploration at mission, architecture, system, and technology level. Supporting international collaboration efforts in the field of exploration missions and supporting the definition and analysis of future international exploration mission scenarios and associated technology requirements. Supporting activities involving engagement of external parties industry, academia, international partners organised by HRE in the field of exploration. This is a full time located at ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands. The requested start of work is February 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter. Qualifications Competencies The successful candidate will have A Masters level degree in an Aerospace Engineering or Space Systems Engineering or a related discipline. At least 4 years relevant professional experience ideally gained in the space industry. Relevant practical knowledge and experience in space mission design, feasibility studies, and the related informatics tools. Knowledge and practice in the application of ESA System Engineering Standards e.g. ECSSE10 series. Awareness of technology development roadmaps, technology readiness levels, and the associated risk assessment. Knowledge and awareness of potential international partners and their associated exploration programmes. Experience with requirements management and the associated tools, e.g. DOORS, would be an advantage. Prior experience of Mars robotic mission analysis and design would be considered a distant advantage. Kayser is building a technology portfolio in the UK and has a long history of working with universities to bring innovations from the research laboratory into space applications. Kayser Space is currently expanding its team to work on ESA funded projects related to hardware development for life science experiments on board the International Space Station. The company is also involved in a range of other microgravity experiments, space technology development and the translation of space hardware and knowhow to other sectors, particularly within the life sciences remit. Key Tasks Responsibilities Reporting to the Programme Manager Technical Lead, the Systems Engineer generates hardware systems concepts, specification, architecture and development plans for new and existing space flight systems, with main duties and responsibilities to include Definition and analysis of system and subsystem requirements from specified userscientific requirements. In the absence of clearly defined specifications, be able to understand the underlying goals in order to proposeclarify equipment requirements. Determine systems architecture specifications and working parameters for hardwaresoftware compatibility and coordinate the development of subsystems to integrate the total system. Specify interfaces between hardware and software to develop and integrate cohesive systems and products. Ability to tradeoff design and technical options to establish the right solution and where applicable procurement method, e.g. make or buy. Overall responsibility for technical control and test activities, including availability of facilities, EGSE and test systems, production of test procedures and test results reports, and verification and tracking of requirements. Ensure the complete and timely preparation of project materials and services in line with the technical specifications of the contract. Manage delivery of system and subsystem work packages, including associated documentation, according to standard space engineering practices. Liaise with wider team electronics, software, mechanical design, space systems engineers and scientists, customers, subcontractors and external suppliers on technical matters relating to design, implementation, test and any related systems engineering issues. Provide support in relevant aspects of bidding activities. Essential Skills Experience Qualified to BSc level in Engineering, Physics or equivalent. At least 3years systems engineering experience in space flight hardware development projects, including requirements capture and analysis, design phase, manufacture, procurement and integration phase and test activities. Knowledge of ECSS standards and space engineering practices. Experience working with multidisciplinary teams of scientists and engineers. Proven ability to work independently and use own initiative to identify, clarify and agree scope of tasks, including required documentation output. Desirable Skills Experience Postgraduate qualifications to MSc or PhD level. Familiarity with risk analysis and mitigation, as well as quality and safety aspects, particularly in manned spaceflight environments. Familiarity with life science experiments, microgravity environments, radiation susceptibilityeffectsanalysismodelling andor CubeSat platforms. Right to work in the UK. This role is based in Harwell and will require full time attendance at our offices. There will be the opportunity for some occasional international travel to client sites, especially within Europe.
