Global smartphone shipments fall another 6.6% in Q1 despite Huawei surge - IDC
2019-05-01 09:19:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Worldwide smartphone shipments plunged another 6.6 percent in the first quarter of 2019, marking the sixth consecutive quarter of decline, according to preliminary data from IDC. The fall to 310.8 million units is a clear sign that 2019 will be another down year for worldwide smartphone shipments, predicted the researcher, with Huawei and Vivo the only two vendors currently bucking market trends after posting strong year on year rises of 50.3 percent and 24.0 percent respectively.

IDC downgrades smartphone forecast, sees 2nd year of market contraction
2018-05-30 14:52:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) IDC has downgraded its forecast for the global smartphone market in 2018, due mainly to continued weak sales in China. In February, the market researcher said it expected the market to recover to low single-digit growth this year, after a 0.3 percent fall in 2017, the first drop ever in the smartphone market. However, its latest forecast predicts unit shipments will contract again in 2018, down an estimated 0.2 percent to 1.462 billion units. Growth should return in 2019, at around 3 percent, and continue at a CAGR of 2.5 percent to reach 1.654 billion units in 2022.
Smartphone shipments down 3% in Q1, Xiaomi doubles sales - IDC
2018-05-03 09:13:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) The global smartphone market declined 2.9 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2018 due above all to a slowdown in China, according to latest figures from IDC. Vendors shipped a total of 334.3 million units in the first three months of 2018 compared to 344.3 million units a year earlier, with volumes in China dipping below 100 million for the first time since the third quarter of 2013, attributed by IDC to the lack of new smartphone converts. The researcher said consumers appear to be unwilling to shell out big money for increasingly expensive handsets that bring minimal upgrades over their current device.
