ResponsibilitiesDuties You are passionate about space flight dynamics and looking for a meaningful opportunity to enfold your talents? Then you are on the right track! We are supporting the European Space Agency with highly qualified services at the European Operations Control Centre ESOC in Darmstadt. For a new service position within flight dynamics division we are searching for a flight dynamics authority to complement our international service team! You will provide support to the Mission Analysis section primarily for Lagrange Point Interplanetary missions plus Lunar and Libration Point missions if needed. This includes the trajectory optimisation for interplanetary transfer and science phases and navigationguidance, including optical navigation. Furthermore, you will support concurrent design studies for future space missions and contribute to the mission analysis tools development. Additional tasks are the support to other projects, scientists and industry, and participation in reviews. Detailed information on the missions and the activities of ESOC can be found on www.esa.int QualificationsExperience University degree in a relevant engineering field, astronomy, mathematics or physics. Essential Skills The ideal candidate we are looking for contributes to our service team with the following characteristics An outstanding expertise in trajectory optimisation, including the multibody problem. Skills in navigation and guidance techniques. Experience in Software Development C, Python and shell scripting. Experience in Mission Analysis Tools Development local and global optimisation techniques and algorithms, covariance and MonteCarlo analysis, environmental models, numerical integration techniques Proficiency in classical mechanics, including kinematics and dynamics of point masses, dynamics of rigid bodies, noninertial reference frames, e.g. including dynamics in rotating frames, rotation dynamics expressed in body fixed frame, conservation laws in mechanics, gravitational forces and field, orbit dynamics, Keplerian orbits and Kepler laws. Skills to apply above knowledge to develop solutions to technical problems in cooperation with customers and other specialists. Knowledge about operational and ground segment aspects in the missionarchitecture design. Desire to extend technical skills. A high sense of operational responsibility and good communication skills. Fluency in English, both in speech and writing. Coordinate and interact with other service providers in operations and other fields. Ability to work independently. Desirable Skills Additional desirable skills are Familiarity with the ESOC environment. Previous operational experience in Flight Dynamics or spacecraft missions in general. Familiarity with modern software development tools git, CICD, CMake, docker Experience with Linux, network services and protocols, and system administration. The ability to multitask efficiently working on multiple activities, multiple subsystems and if applicable multiple missions simultaneously. As our Engineer, Flight Dynamics, you will be responsible for The orbital control, colocation, orbital events prediction, momentum management and propellant lifetime estimation of the SES GEO and MEO satellites The development of the orbital and satellite control software Shadowing of transfer orbit mission operations in the Flight Dynamics section Providing expertise for any flight dynamics related activity to other stakeholders Primary responsibilities Be responsible for a safe and efficient colocation andor stationkeeping of the SES GEO and MEO satellites, while minimizing propellant usage to maximize satellite lifetime, satisfying satellite constraints and avoiding risk of collision between SES colocated satellites. Manage large unexpected orbit perturbations or maneuver execution performance issues to maintain the satellite in the stationkeeping window and to avoid risk of collision. Design develop and test software in the orbital and satellite control fields to carry out and support all the above. Perform conjunction analysis, interface with external organization e.g. US Air Force, satellite operators and plan corrective maneuvers in case of close approach with another satellite or debris. Determine and maximize satellite propellant lifetime of SES satellites, including propellant tank management Provide orbit and related events predictions information to internal sections, external organization e.g. Teleport and customers Review and challenge the mission design for satellite launches, shadow the implementation and lead the maneuver planning during the inorbit test phase Design and implement satellite relocations to meet SES business needs, while ensuring safe separation with other satellites, minimizing propellant consumption and coping with satellite and interference constraints Collaborate with Satellite Engineering to investigate satellite anomalies related to attitude control and propulsion systems Providing on call support when needed Qualifications Experience Masters degree in physics, mathematics or engineering. Indepth knowledge in following specialized fields astrodynamics, tracking systems, orbit estimation methods, orbital control of GEO and MEO satellites Have a broad and comprehensive knowledge of satellite subsystems, Capable to autonomously solve and model problems in mathematical and physics fields Understanding of numerical analysis and scientific software development Experience in Python software development required, any additional programming language being an asset LinuxUnix environment and GIT version control is preferred Experience in graphical user interface development or test automation is preferred. The key person will be part of the ESOC Flight Dynamics division, which provides Mission Analysis and Flight Dynamics operations support to ESA and third party missions during all mission phases. The Flight Dynamics Operations Engineer will work to develop software tools in the frame of the CAP project, which involves a modernisation of tools used by mission analysts based on new flight dynamics infrastructure software, GODOT.
