Position Reference 970 We are currently looking for a Flight DynamicsOrbit determination Engineer to work at ESOC premises in the city of Darmstadt, Germany. Tasks and Activities The scope of work will include Routine orbit determination of all interplanetary and lagrangian missions in routine operations, including e.g. Mars Express, ExoMars TGO and GAIA. GAIA long term orbit reconstruction shall be run every quarter of the year. Cruise orbit determination for interplanetary mission, e.g. RSP, JUICE BepiColombo and Solar orbiter. Orbit determination for interplanetary missions for critical phase e.g. planetary approach, planetary swingbys, e.g. BepiColombo, Solo, RSP, JUICE. FD systems development and maintenance Extension and modification of orbit determination tools e.g. MODS, GODOT, as required. Implementation of auxiliary tools and scripts, in support of orbit determination tasks. MODS Modular Orbit Determination Suite is ESOCs legacy orbit determination software written in FORTRAN and which is based on AMFIN. The core orbit determination program BODIT is one element of MODS. GODOT General Orbit Determination and Optimisation Toolkit is the new FD common infrastructure software written in C. Applications and libraries that are developed and used for operational orbit determination tasks are based on GODOT. In addition, a PYTHON environment is used for performing auxiliary operations related analysis and tasks. Launch preparation Integration of the FD orbit tools in the operational platform. Testing of tools at unit, subsystem and system level. Participation and support to FD system tests. Participation and support to FD system initialisation. Participation and support to ESOC wide simulations. Support to mission readiness tests and tracking campaigns with the ground stations as required by the mission profile LEOP support in the orbit determination domain JUICE, RSP and EUCLID Setup of FD Orbit subsystem for LEOP support, support for stations tracking calibration campaigns, assessment of launcher performance, early orbit determination. Orbit analysis, e.g. to review mission design aspects or provide consultancy for ground segment and ESA project teams of interplanetary and science missions. Oncall support may be required during LEOP periods and for critical operations. Skills and Experience The following skills and experience are mandatory University degree in a relevant engineering field, astronomy, mathematics or physics. Very good skills in linear algebra, in particular for problem solving related to geometry in the Euclidean 3dimensional space. Very good skills in calculus in one or several variables. Skills in numerical methods for equations solving, integration of differential equations, function approximation and interpolation, optimisation, linear algebra problems. Very good skills in classical mechanics, including kinematics and dynamics of point masses, dynamics of rigid bodies, dynamics expressed in noninertial reference frames, e.g. including dynamics in rotating frames, rotation dynamics expressed in body fixed frame, conservation laws in mechanics, gravitational forces and field, orbit dynamics, Keplerian orbits and Kepler laws. Skills to apply above knowledge to develop solutions to technical problems in cooperation with customers and other experts. Very good C programming skills and experience, in particular in objectoriented design and coding skills using C as main programming language. Experience in scripting languages, e.g. python, shell scripting languages. Experience in Linux operating system. Will to take operational responsibility in multidiscipline teams. Coordinate and interact with other service providers in operations and other fields. Ability to work independently. Familiarity with the ESOC environment. Familiarityexperience with Flight Dynamics operations engineering tasks. Experience dealing with external interfaces. Experience with Linux, network services and protocols, and system administration Fluency in English, both written and spoken. The following skills would be highly desirable Being familiar with different representations of rotation in 3D, thus including the representation of SC attitude cosine direction matrix, Euler symmetric parameters quaternions, Eulerangles, .... Command Generation for science missions for critical phase e.g. planetary approach, planetary swingby. Work on critical scenarios starts months before the event with designing an operational timeline fulfilling SC constraints and all external requirements e.g. communication requirements science requirements requirements on orbit maintenance. FD command generator design, development and maintenance Identify and implement the required primitive command modules PCMs, that constitute the atomic pieces of SW that may be invoked by a command generation procedure. Setting up validation procedures e.g. check the applicable SC constraints. Conduct a functional emulation to check that the commands produce the desired results. Launch preparation Integration of the FD command generation tools in the operational platform. Testing of tools at unit, subsystem and system level. Participation and support to FD system tests. Participation and support to SVT and ATB tests, and similar tests involving SC, SC engineering models or SC test equipment. Participation and support to FD system initialisation. Participation and support to ESOC wide simulations. LEOP and NECP support in the command generation domain JUICE, RSP and EUCLID Setup of FD Command subsystem for LEOP and NECP support. GNC analyses, e.g. to review GNC design aspects, analyse telemetry or provide consultancy for ground segment and ESA project teams of interplanetary and science missions. Review of GNC documentation and inputs from SC manufacturer for Science missions. Definition of ground procedures for command generation, in coordination with SC manufacturer, SC project group and Ground segment. Oncall support may be required during LEOP periods and for critical operations. Attitude products include e.g. attitude files, solar radiation pressure files and event files. Analysis of the state of the spacecraft for the above missions on each working day, provided that new telemetry is available, including detailed analysis of any suspicious telemetry. Reporting of any anomalies to the Flight Dynamics Attitude Monitoring Subsystem leader, Flight Dynamics Manager and Flight Control Teams. Live telemetry monitoring for interplanetary missions in critical phases e.g. planetary approach, planetary swingby Generation of calibrations of AOCS units, either as per industry procedure, or ad hoc if required by the operational circumstances. Detailed analysis of anomalies or anomalous behaviour, or longterm predictions of circumstances or expected SC behaviour. FD systems development and maintenance Design, implementation, extension and modification of attitude determination tools e.g. telemetry processing and product generation software, as required. Implementation of auxiliary tools and scripts in support of attitude determination tasks. Document review Review of the satellites documentation and its application to FD procedures. Written reports of the results including suggestions for improvement. Participation in the associated formal review process. Launch preparation Integration of the FD attitude tools in the operational platform including the generation of missionspecific procedures. Testing of tools at unit, subsystem and system level. Participation and support to FD system tests. Participation and support to FD system initialisation. Participation and support to ESOCwide simulations. Flight Dynamics Operations Engineer Test and Validation Attitude for Science Missions

For our customer, ESOC in Darmstadt, Germany, we are seeking an experienced Flight Dynamics Operations Engineers. The primary areas of responsibility for this position are the Test Validation in the AOCS domain TVA for Science Missions, including interplanetary missions and missions in Lagrangian orbits. The service to be provided is primarily related to EXOMARS RSP, Euclid launch preparation, LEOP support and operations, and BepiColombo operations. However, the engineer may also be requested to provide the services related to GAIA, Mars Express, ExoMars TGO, JUICE, Hera and Solar Orbiter. Responsibilities The general activities to be supported depending on the phase of the mission are listed in the following and shall be provided on the Flight Dynamics compute platform ORATOS Test and Validation Execution of operational tasks Validation of operational Flight Dynamics data products such as command parameter sets, reports, event predictions and acquisition data before delivery to Flight Control Team and other users Validation of operational Flight Dynamics subsytems processes and procedures Flight Dynamics Application Layer Maintenance and sustaining of software elements of the Flight Dynamics Application Layer Flight Dynamics System Development Specification of modifications, enhancements and additions to existing software elements Implementation of modifications, enhancements and additions to existing software elements Installation of modifications, enhancements and additions to existing software elements on operational platforms design, coordination and implementation of tests Definition, planning and participation in tests Setup procedures Flight Dynamics SubSystem configuration General Flight Dynamics operations engineering activities During the oncall periods the staff on call may be provided by ESOC with a mobile phone depending on the operational needs. Dependent on the case the staff may need to come to ESOC on short notice typically within one hour to provide the required operations support. Details of the actual oncall service shall be agreed between ESA and the provider. This is a fulltime position to be located at ESOCs premises in Darmstadt with the planned start date ASAP but no later than 1st February 2022.
