Get out the wallet: Airlines are charging more fees than ever

According to an annual study from IdeaWorksCompany and CarTrawler, ancillary fee revenue from additional charges for things like checked bags and changed reservations jumped 21 percent year over year to a record high of $38.1 billion. As CNBC's Phil LeBeau reports, the growth in those revenues has been dramatic, as airlines brought in just $2.5 billion in ancillary fees in 2007.

Hawaiian Airlines opened its Plumeria Lounge at Honolulu International Airport late last month for business class travelers flying to its 11 international destinations. For Hawaiian Airlines, a subsidiary of Hawaiian Holdings Inc. , the opening of the international business class lounge completes a two-phase, multimillion dollar renovation of its airport lounges , which include five Premier Lounges in Hilo, Honolulu, Kahului, Kona and Lihue.

Hawaiian Airlines warns Qantas-American alliance threatens competition

Hawaiian Airlines has lashed out at Qantas and American Airlines' plans to deepen their trans-Pacific alliance, warning that it threatens to lock out smaller airlines which will be denied access to domestic passenger traffic. The competition regulator last week gave interim approval to Qantas and American Airlines' revenue-sharing alliance despite opposition from Air New Zealand, because it deemed it likely to lead to additional capacity on routes from Sydney to San Francisco and Los Angeles.
