TIM fined EUR 116 mln for abusing dominant position in fibre rollout

(Telecompaper) Italian antitrust watchdog AGCM has fined Telecom Italia (TIM) a total of EUR 116 million for abusing its dominant position in the expansion of its fibre-optic broadband network to underserved and rural areas across the country. In a decision issued some 3 years after the investigation was launched, Italy's antitrust authority accused TIM of purposely taking steps to slow down the process of rolling out broadband in so-called digital divide areas by appealing against the tenders launched by the government.

OECD grows to 9 countries with over 50% fibre broadband

(Telecompaper) The OECD's latest broadband statistics show nine of its member countries now have over half of broadband connections over fibre, up from six countries a year earlier. Overall, the share of fibre in broadband connections across the 37 countries increased to 27 percent as of June 2019, from 24 percent a year earlier.
