Earth Observation Ground Segment Engineer 1311086 Job Description S5P is an Earth Observation Mission within the GMES Programme where the Payload Data Ground Segment PDGS is developed by DLR, under direct Project responsibility, while the FOS is under ESOC responsibility. The selected candidate will support the definition, the implementation and the validation of the Ground Segment in collaboration with the S5P Project team, ESOC and DLR. Furthermore the candidate will support the preparation of the Spacecraft Inorbit Operations up to and including the Commissioning Phase Review. The main duties include Support to the refinement of the Ground Segment Concept within the project team and in collaboration with teams in ESOC and DLR Refinement and maintenance of the requirements for specific aspects of the Flight Operations Segment and Payload Data Ground Segment Contribution to the definition of the Spacecraft to Ground Segment Interfaces and monitoring in collaboration with the Spacecraft and AIT manager proper implementation and verification of those Interfaces Coordination of deliveries of the Level 1B and Level 2 processors to the PDGS developers and follow up corresponding integration and validation tasks Monitoring of the implementation of the FOS and PDGS, ensuring compatibility between the Spacecraft and the Ground Segment Elements Support Project Reviews at Satellite, GS and System levels Preparation of prelaunch ground system validation activities, including generation of test plans and test data in collaboration with the S5P Ground Segment Manager and the Spacecraft and AIT manager Coordination of daytoday prelaunch validation activities, organize test reviews and generation of reports Participation in preparation and execution of the inorbit system validation and verification tasks, under the responsibility of the S5P Commissioning Phase Manager Required Skills and Experience University degree in Engineering or Physics Ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team within the boundaries of assigned tasks and a stringent schedule Experience relevant to the tasks detailed in the job description Proficiency in the English language spoken and written Work Location Noordwijk, Netherlands Dates Application Deadline 09 October 2013 Start of Work 18 November 2013 Important Notes Before applying to this position, please read the page Notes to Applicants on the Solenix website under Career. The Mission For all missions that use ESTRACK during its preparation, critical or routine phase a Ground Operations Engineer is assigned. Ground Operations Engineers are responsible for providing the ops engineering required for their missions during preparation and execution phase. During the routine phase they are the first level of escalation above ECC and Scheduling Office. Their typical counterparts on the side of ESA missions are Analysts and Spacecraft Operations Engineers, for external missions their interface is to the customers. The Challenge We are looking for an experienced Ground Operations Engineer GOE, to be located at our customers site, ESOC in Darmstadt. The responsibilities of the GOE include in particular Participate in the mission specific design of the ground segment elements Participate in the mission specific validation of ground segment elements prior to critical operations Participate in the critical operations phases for that mission Participate in the definition of mission specific ground station configuration in the ops preparation phase and after major modifications Participate in the validation of station configuration and MC tailoring for remote operations Monitor performance of ESTRACK services provided to customers and trigger corrective actions in case of degradations Initiate or conduct investigations into anomalies affecting the Ground service to the mission Participate in regular meeting with missions e.g. WORM, ICM or event driven meetings e.g. MRBs. The support comprises in particular the following tasks Setup and validation of the Earth Observation Missions, including OM LEOP support and other critical operations phases support Setup and validation of the Astronomy and Fundamental Physics Missions, including LEOP support and other critical operations phases support Setup and validation of the Solar and Planetary Missions, including LEOP support and other critical operations phases support Team member for the Galileo LEOP support. This is a full time position, starting 1st January 2014, with a minimum of 2 years duration with possible extension. Your Qualifications This position requires a person with University or similar degree in engineering or physics together with a several years of good professional experience in ground operations for spacecraft missions. Candidates must be systemminded and able to work as a member of an international and interdisciplinary team. Previous expertise of spacecraft ground operations is highly desirable. Fluent written and spoken English is required. Knowledge of French would be advantageous.
