Thorn Satellite Data Services Thorn SDS is an independently owned service organisation specialising in the placement, management and development of technical and engineering staff within a wide range of European Space Programmes. From its Head Office in Darmstadt, Germany, Thorn supports and manages a large team of Space professionals with many different disciplines and skills, ranging from engineering, satellite scheduling, operations and maintenance. We are constantly looking to grow and develop the team and have many opportunities for candidates looking to further their careers or experience within this business. Thorn SDS is currently looking for a Consultant Ground Station Engineer to complement its team in Darmstadt, Germany and welcomes applications from interested and appropriately qualified candidates available from June onwards. Candidates should have sound management and interpersonal skills as well as good analytical capabilities they should also be able to work independently with a minimum level of supervision. The working language of this and most positions within Thorn SDS is English and all applicants should be native English speakers or, as a minimum, be able to work highly effectively in this language. Candidates must have a university degree in an engineering disciple and have the following knowledge and experience System Engineering practices and experience of requirements engineering Phase B of large and complex Low Earth Orbit LEO ground stations Ground stations system and subsystem design for TTC Telemetry, Tracking and Control, mission specific and satellite communications ground stations e.g. Cortex TTC subsystem Technical background in the specification and Validation and Verification of large antennas and tracking systems Antenna Control Unit ACU and receivers inclusive TTC baseband equipment including ranging systems and SLE compliant implementations Specification and implementation of Mission Data Acquisition baseband equipment Local and Remote MC system for ground stations System experience with Link budget analysis and tools in S, X and Ka Band. Experience in the following areas would be considered advantageous but is not mandatory Involvement and understanding of Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites CGMS Global Specifications Knowledge of European Cooperation for Space Standardisation ECSS and engineering standards in RF and modulation standards Knowledge of Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems CCSDS recommendations within RF, modulation and Space Link Extension SLE areas Knowledge of service providers in the area of Ground Stations Specification and System performances of In Orbit Test Systems in support of Satellite In Orbit Verification SIOV activities RF related for Earth Observation Satellites preferably LEO spacecraft LEO ground stations maintenance requirements and restraints Industry best practices on maintenance policies and procedures for ground stations supporting 24x7 operational programmes Knowledge and experience with Requirements Management and Traceability Tools e.g. DOORS, modelling and design tools e.g. CORE and process management tools e.g. MS Visio.

Job Summary The Future Ground Systems department is looking for a talented systems engineer to join our dynamic and motivated team responsible for RD, Innovation and Earth Observation Ground Segment project execution. The candidate will work in parallel on several projects, and will hold different roles on each, from study engineer to technical lead. Ground Segment System and Network Engineer

This position, based near Frankfurt in Germany, is for a Ground Segment System and Network Engineer with at least 3 years experience working with high availability systems to support the clients GS team. The client is responsible for establishing and operating weather forecasting and Earth observation satellite programmes with associated data telemetry and dissemination operations. The key duties of the engineer will be to write and review requirement specifications and change proposals, prepare procurements, participate in technical inspections and reviews, document the communication and network architecture system design and write evaluation reports, review reports and overall status reports. Knowledge and experience with the following is considered mandatory Experience in preparation of system requirements and design documentation Knowledge of Cisco network and security equipment and architectures Knowledge of high availability network architectures and protocols e.g. HSRP,VSS Familiarity with network management, QoS and traffic shaping principles Familiarity with satellite communications DVB, VSAT, Point to Point links. Knowledge and experience with the following is considered an advantage Experience in the definition of space related ground segments Experience in the integration and verification of such systems Experience in systemlevel analyses from an endtoend perspective Knowledge of ECSS standards. Knowledge and experience with the following is considered beneficial Experience in use of requirements management and traceability tools e.g.DOORS Experience in the use of modeling and design tools in support of architectural design activities e.g. CORE Experience with the Microsoft Office Suite, including MSVisio. This is a freelance contract assignment with an initial period of 2 years starting in June 2013 with two options to extend for a further period of one year each.
