ESA is an equal opportunity employer, committed to achieving diversity within the workforce and creating an inclusive working environment. Applications from women are encouraged. Post Internal Research Fellow PostDoc in Optical Ground Support Equipment This post is classified F2 on the Coordinated Organisations salary scale. Location ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands Description Within the Mechatronics and Optics Division, the Optics Section provides functional support to ESA projects and carries out technological research activities in the following areas optical component technology, such as microoptics, passive integrated optics, xray optics optical instrumentation, such as spectroradiometric imaging instruments in the visible and infrared interferometers testing, calibration and performance verification of optical systems. Fields of activitiesresearch In the frame of calibrating hyperspectral instruments, the development of optical ground support equipment OGSE is very cost and time intensive. Generally speaking, a new and dedicated OGSE has to be designed and built from scratch for each instrument. This often leads to delayed and costly OGSEs which may end up not being an appropriate fit for the hyperspectral instrument needing to be calibrated. The selected candidate will work on the following range of topics linked to OGSEs for hyperspectral instruments, initially covering ultraviolet UV, visible VIS and possibly shortwave infrared SWIR spectral range Investigating existing OGSEs Looking at tradeoffs between different setup, light sources, etc. Identifying commonalities between different OGSE use for instruments, such that a more general OGSE could potentially be designed and then used by several different instruments Technical competencies Ability to conduct research autonomously Breadth of exposure coming from past andor current researchactivities Researchpublication record Knowledge relevant to the field of research General interest in space and space research Ability to gather and share relevant information Behavioural competencies Innovation Creativity Continuous Learning Self Motivation Communication Problem Solving Relationship Management CrossCultural Sensitivity Education Applicants should have recently completed, or be close to completion of a PhD in physics or optical engineering. Amazon starts satellite download, cloud storage service with 12 antenna ground stations
2018-11-28 09:30:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Amazon Web Services (AWS) has started a new cloud service that simplifies the download and storage of data from satellites. The announcement was made at the company's AWS re:Invent event. With its new AWS Ground Station, Amazon is inviting space and other companies to use a managed network of 12 ground station antennas stationed around the world. The antennas will let users download satellite data to a ground station and then process it at an Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) centre. The data can then be stored with Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) and AWS analytics and machine learning services can be applied to gain insights. Users can also use Amazon's network to move the data to other regions and processing facilities. TechCrunch calls the product "satellites as a service."
