Jolla, the company set up by former Nokia executives to keep the Meego operating system alive, raised more than $841,000 on Wednesday, the first day of its Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign. That's 221 percent of its goal of $380,000 -- and the campaign has 21 days to go, closing Dec. 9. Nearly 5,325 people have contributed to the campaign, although only about 3,800 actually purchased the tablets.

Nokia introduces Android tablet in return to mobile devices

Nokia Oyj unveiled a tablet running Google Inc.'s Android software, marking a return by the former smartphone-market leader into mobile devices just months after it sold its handset business to Microsoft Corp. The N1 tablet uses Nokia's software on top of the Google operating system, Sebastian Nystrom, head of products at Nokia, said at the Slush technology conference in Helsinki today. The device is made and sold by Foxconn Technology Group and costs $249 plus tax.

Jolla launches first tablet in crowdfunding campaign

(Telecompaper) Jolla has started a fundraising drive on IndieGogo to launch its first tablet. Running version 2.0 of Jolla's Sailfish OS, the tablet will feature a 7.85-inch display, 1.8 GHz Intel processor, 2GB memory, a 2 megapixel front camera and 5 megapixel back camera. Within a couple hours of starting the crowdfunding campaign, Jolla sold out the initial batch of 1,000 tablets, offered for USD 189 each. It aims to deliver the first devices in May 2015. A second lot of 1,000 units is available for USD 199 each. The tablet can be shipped to the EU, Norway, Switzerland, US, India, China, Hong Kong or Russia. In total Jolla raised the USD 380,000 targeted in the tablet campaign within the first day.
