Apple gains market share in Europe, loses in the US in Q2

(Telecompaper) Apple returned to growth in the smartphone market in the second quarter in Europe's five largest countries, while losing share in the US, according to the latest figures from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech. Apple's gains were the strongest in the UK of the five European markets, adding 5.5 percent points year-on-year to reach 34.1 percent of smartphone sales. Android's share in the UK fell by 6.1 points to 53.2 percent. In Spain, Italy, Germany and France, Android still had over 70 percent of the market, with as much as 88 percent in Spain, up 3 percent points from a year earlier. In the US, Apple's market share fell by 2.3 percent points year-on-year to 30.5 percent, while Android gained 3.4 points to reach 66.1 percent. Kantar estimates that both Samsung and LG increased their shares sequentially in the period in the US and together took 78 percent of all Android sales. LG especially performed well, doubling its share of the US market and also for the first time acquiring more first-time smartphone buyers than Samsung. Forty-three percent of all Android buyers in the US mentioned a 'good deal on the price of the phone' as the main purchase driver for their new device, while the size of the screen was the main factor driving Android sales in Europe. Microsoft's Windows Phone also showed some gains in the quarter, adding 4.1 percent points in both Germany and Italy to reach respectively 10.5 and 14.2 percent of smartphone sales. Its share in the US was up 1.1 points to 3.0 percent in Q2. Apple also posted strong gains in China, taking just over a fifth of sales, up by 7.3 points from a year ago. Android's share in China fell to 79.0 percent from 84.3 a year ago. Huawei's Honor brand led sales in China, Kantar said, while Meizu also posted a strong increase in market share. In Japan, Apple also grew, by 2.7 points to 42.2 percent of sales, while Android fell to 54.4 percent from 59.6 a year ago.

IPhone Chip Suppliers Feel Burn As Apple Implodes

Apple shares got whacked again Tuesday, and the stock's plunge also looks to be affecting its chip suppliers, including Skyworks Solutions, Cirrus Logic and Qorvo. Shares sank as much as 4.3% in huge volume, dropping to their lowest level in more than six months.

Apple Canada tells Ingram to stop selling used iPhones to Wind

Apple Canada Inc. has demanded that Ingram Micro Inc. stop selling used iPhones in Canada after the distributor struck a deal to supply the devices to Wind Mobile Corp., according to sources. Three industry sources say Apple and Ingram exchanged correspondence in late July, with Apple Inc.'s Canadian subsidiary demanding that Ingram stop selling used iPhones in Canada, arguing that it was a breach of Ingram's contract with Apple.

Apple Inc. (AAPL) Watch Sales Reportedly Weak And May Continue To Be Through 2015

More bad news about Apple Inc. appears to be emerging as The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Apple Watch sales may have been weak in the second quarter , a report that comes as the iPhone maker's stock dipped to $113.25 per share in intra-day trading today, down over 4% from yesterday and the lowest price the stock has had in over six months. According to the report, Bernstein Research analyst Mark Li has revealed that a subsidiary of Taiwanese company Advanced Semiconductor Engineering Inc. which makes the system-in-package, the core chips and sensors component also called the SiP, of the Apple Watch did not reach its "break-even volume" of two million SiP units a month throughout the second quarter.

Apple in talks to launch MVNO in US, Europe - report

(Telecompaper) Apple is in talks to launch its own virtual network service in the US and Europe, Business Insider reported. Sources close to Apple said the company is privately trialing a MVNO service in the US and is also in talks with telecoms companies in Europe about bringing the service there. According to the report, there is not guarantee Apple will launch the service, and if it does, it's not expected anytime soon. Unnamed telecoms sources said Apple is looking long-term with its MVNO and could take at least five years to fully launch the service. Business Insider also reported earlier that Apple was testing a service called iCloud Voicemail that will automatically transcribe voicemail messages using Siri.
