The stink at the compost facility on Redmond Road, the largest in the state, emerged last summer as it received increasing amounts of organic waste because of an expansive recycling law passed in 2012.

But when a late-summer heat wave lingered past Labor Day, residents say the nearby Sunshine Canyon Landfill sent an especially malodorous cloud through Granada Hills homes and schools, generating 178 complaints this month to air regulators.

Rail car smoldering for 2 weeks raises stink about township leader's business

A township leader said it's not his fault that his business for weeks has hosted a stinky freight car full of smoldering grain. Advance Newspapers reports that Alpine Township Trustee Ron Cordes is working with the fire department and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality on a solution to the odor, "but at this point I'm not sure what we can do," he said.

A friend of mine whom Ive known since high school earned the nickname Shoe because his feet smelled so bad. Wed always yell at him to put his shoes back on. It got to the point that if any of us smelled anything foul, wed assume it was John and just yell Shoe and on went the footwear.
