For our activities in the European Space Agency, ESAC, we are currently seeking to employ an Engineer to support the Euclid mission Overview Euclid is a highprecision survey mission in the Cosmic Vision Programme of ESA designed to answer fundamental questions on Dark Energy and Dark Matter. Euclid will map the largescale structure of the universe over the entire extragalactic sky out to redshifts of 2 about 10 billion years ago, thus covering the period over which dark energy accelerated the universe expansion. The mission is optimized for two primary cosmological probes Weak gravitational Lensing WL and Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations BAO. The ESAC team is forming the Euclid Science Operations Centre SOC, which will build the Science Ground Segment in collaboration with the Euclid Consortium. The Euclid SOC will execute and monitor the sky survey, perform initial processing on the science telemetry stream and provide the Euclid archive. The Euclid SOC will work with the Euclid Consortium in the area of instrument operations coordination. You will work on the survey planning system, which will plan the Euclid Sky Survey and the instrument commanding system, which will be in use during the operational phases of the mission. The successful candidate who fills this position will be Experience in interacting with the science community Willing to operate in a team environment and to travel Posses good interpersonal and communication skills Comfortable in an international working environment and be fluent in English Specific tasks The service to be provided by the successful applicant for this position will encompass contributing to the system requirements definition, design, implementation and testing of the survey planning and instrument command generation systems to be used within the Euclid Science Ground Segment. They will develop prototype code for the survey planning and instrument commanding tools. The development will be in done in Java to enable reuse of existing code from other missions located at ESAC. They will work in the Engineering team of the Euclid SOC under the System Engineer and will interface with the major stakeholders of these systems the Sky Survey Working Group, SOC Calibration and Operations Team, Instrument Operations Teams and Euclid Mission Operations Centre. Qualifications and Requirements Applicants require a University degree, or equivalent, in computer science, or related fields together with either an educational, or workacquired, knowledge of astronomyphysics and standard numerical methods and techniques would be a strong asset. A working understanding of space operations would be highly desirable You will have a solid Java background, a minimum of 4 years. Description The Key Person defined in Article 12 of the Contract will be mainly providing engineering support, to the EPSSG Ground Segment Technical Manager in the frame of the EPSSG Preparatory Programme Phase B. Profile The Key person shall have a university degree or equivalent in an engineering discipline relevant to the job profile together with the experience and capability to fulfil the assigned tasks with a minimum of supervision. The Key person shall have, as a prerequisite, a demonstrated experience in a similar function for at least three years working with high availability systems. External Data Services Operations Engineer Consultancy Support 1313015016 Job Description The EUMETSAT Operations Department currently operates the Meteosat Transition Programme MTP space and ground satellite system, the Meteosat Second Generation MSG and also both the EUMETSAT Polar System EPS space and ground satellite systems. The focus of routine operations at EUMETSAT is the provision, by effective utilisation of all elements of the space and ground systems, of timely and reliable operational services to the users. The aim of the EUMETSAT Advanced Retransmission Service EARS is to provide polar satellite data from the EUMETSAT Metop and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration NOAA satellites with a timeliness suited to the needs of European operational short range regional numerical weather prediction models. WORKING HOURS Two types of support are required from the Consultant Normal support Standby callout support Standby callout support The following provisions shall apply for standby callout support Our client will specify in advance, on a work package basis, the schedule and scope for standby support. Requests for standby support must be authorised by the client technical representative. During periods of standby support, the Key person shall respond to calls by telephone or beeper outside normal working hours, and shall provide remote support to Operations. The Key person may, by telephone, ascertain the nature of the problem but must be available, if required, to be present in the Mission Control Centre within one hour of callout. In such a case the callout support will essentially aim at restoring the missionservice. REPORTING Formal reporting is required at monthly intervals or in the event of a major task completion. The monthly reports and any other reports or technical documentation generated shall be submitted in writing directly to the Clients technical representatives. The work will be released in individual Work Packages.
