Our client, based near Frankfurt in Germany, is responsible for establishing and operating weather forecasting and Earth observation satellite programmes with associated data telemetry and dissemination operations. They are seeking consultancy support for software development and maintenance of mission control components and applications designed with an objectoriented approach and client server architecture. The development cycle includes the typical phases requirements, design, development, testing with formal procedures related to configuration control, verification against the software requirements and rollout into operations. Development ranges in a mixed Windows and Unix environment, from fixing problems and engineering changes, technical support to the continuous operation of the system, including analysis, investigation and resolution with creation of appropriate documentation. The Consultant shall have the following mandatory skills and experience o Extensive experience minimum 5 years in the definition, development and maintenance of Mission Control Functions software applications for GEO space missions, in particular, experience in the whole life cycle of development of typical applications like telemetry and telecommand chains, automation schedule and procedure execution, operations preparation, analysis, etc... o Good knowledge and understanding with working experience evidence of space related standards ECSS and CCSDS related to spacetoground interfaces. o Extensive experience minimum 5 years in software development and maintenance following formal software life cycle processes resulting in multiple customer deliveries. This includes production of requirements, design engineering artefacts and implementation reflecting corrective and evolution software maintenance activities as well as new applications definition o Extensive experience minimum 5 years in ground segment AIV related activities test procedure generation, nonregression testing, requirements verification and validation. o Extensive experience minimum 5 years in designing and developing software components and applications using Object Oriented OO approach including design patterns o Extensive experience minimum 5 years designing, developing and programming software applications using C and Java under both Windows and Linux platforms o Experience with formal software development environments like Eclipse IDE and Microsoft Visual Studio. o Very good knowledge of MS Windows Office Suite applications and experience with documentation management systems o Experience in using configuration Management and anomaly reporting and tracking tools. Aurora is an established supplier of skilled manpower to ESA and in particular at ESTEC and ESAC. Aurora has the opportunity to expand our service support within the Science and Robotic Exploration Directorate DSRE. Aurora currently has a team of 20 engineers and scientists at ESAC including support to the Rosetta mission. ESA require an extension of our service to provide an experienced engineer. Overview The Rosetta Science Operations in the Rosetta Science Ground Segment is led by the Rosetta Science Operations Managers in close coordination with the Mission Manager, who has overall responsibility for the Rosetta mission, and with the Project Scientist, who is responsible for optimizing the science return of Rosetta. A basic principle of the Rosetta science operations is the requirement for a strong involvement by each PI team for the preparation of the science operations. The Science Working Team SWT advises the project scientist on science matters for the mission and indirectly assists the RSGS in elaborating science strategies and maximizing the scientific return of the mission. Tasks The work is to provide strong support Auroras Rosetta lead mission planner, Miguel Perez, and will include the Long, Medium and Short term science planning. The job shall also include support for Rosetta with the Planetary Science Archive PSA as follows Interact with the Downlink Science Operations Manager and Project Scientist to ensure that Rosetta archive needs are addressed in the area of general PDS and PSA software development. Such interactions shall include the provision of requirements. Interact with the PSA Software developer to check the correct implementation of user requirements. Aid in the validation of PSA software specific to the Rosetta mission, including DVAL, PRVV, APC, Archive interface. Interact with the PDS for issues specific to the Rosetta mission archive. Interact with and provide support to the PI teams in the area of archive product generation, delivery validation. Support the archive product validation process including reviews. You will report to the Aurora ESAC service manager, Hugo Costa. Specific qualification requirements University degree preferably Masters in Planetary Science Physics or equivalent and relevant professional experience in science operations. Experience needed in the mission planning and operations of a scientific operations centre or a similar system. A minimum of 2 years experience in satellite payload operations. You must be able to work in English. Be able to work independently and also work with colleagues within a small team. Experience with Rosetta is very beneficial. Legal and Security Requirements All applicants must be legally allowed to work in Spain without the need to obtain a work visa. Only European Union citizens can be employed by Aurora in Spain. Applicants are required to provide a copy of their passport and degree certificate. Aurora will validate the Degree with the issuing University and provide evidence to ESA. Prior to issuing a letter of employment the applicant shall provide to Aurora a recent official document declaring that they are of good conduct from the country where currently resident. Location The work will be performed at the ESAC, the European Space Astronomy Centre, at Villafranca del Castillo, near Madrid, Spain. The work will be performed closely with ESTEC and require some travel. Contract You will be registered for both social security and tax in Spain. The standard working hours are 40 per week. There are 12 public holidays and an additional 30 annual holidays. In addition to public health services Aurora provides private medical insurance in Spain. TASKS Definition, assessment and feasibility studies for terrestrial and interplanetary missions. Support to approved projects until launch. For specific questions, support is also given during the operational phase of the mission and for endoflife disposition of space systems. The activities in address all those aspects of a mission which are related to the launch or the orbit of a satellite and to some extent also to the attitude of a satellite. In order to perform the required studies a considerable amount of sophisticated software is needed. A primary task is the computation of the various terrestrial and planetary satellite orbits low earth, geostationary, highly eccentric, interplanetary trajectories and planetary orbiters. Depending on the type of orbits and the required accuracy, various numerical and analytical methods are used. Various additional information is needed pertaining to the spacecraft or to the ground, such as visibility periods from the groundstations, eclipse times or coverage by imaging instruments. In order to rationalize the effort many similar calculations for terrestrial or planetary satellites or interplanetary probes are performed using standard systems developed by the group over many years. Examples of these systems are USOC the Unified System for Orbit Computation that allows in an interactive manner to set up programs tailored to specific tasks by selecting automatically the required modules. INTNAV Interplanetary Navigation is a system used for the analysis of navigation accuracy and requirements. Both USOC and INTNAV have a Graphical User Interface based in TclTk. LOTNAV Has the same purpose as INTNAV but when low thrust is used. DITAN Generation and optimisation of low thrust trajectories MANTRA High fidelity and flexible generation and optimisation of chemical propulsion and low thrust trajectories In HSOGFA numerous standalone programs are in use for the solution of various particular tasks, such as orbit determination, orbit control, orbital manoeuvres, optimization of rocket ascent trajectories, optimum acquisition of the operational orbit, optimization of mission performance, mission planning and reentry calculations. From the nature of tasks it is clear that the program system, as well as the individual programs, need rather frequently upgrading or modifications. Only in this way the particular requirements of a new mission can be satisfied. This flexibility has, of course, a strong impact on the program design and documentation. As new projects often require unconventional orbits andor very specific mission requirements, it is also necessary to introduce new analytical and numerical methods. Frequently new algorithms, solutions and auxiliary calculations are to be developed, either for a specific or general purpose. Such modules or programs can be incorporated in an easily accessible SW library. Design of proper interfaces, careful testing and the preparation of documentation is mandatory.
