Docomo to test 5G with 6 major manufacturing partners
2014-05-08 09:01:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Japanese mobile operator NTT Docomo said it will conduct experimental 5G trials with Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Fujitsu, NEC, Nokia and Samsung. The parallel collaborations between Docomo and each of the six vendors will involve experimental trials to confirm the potential of 5G mobile technologies for frequency bands above 6GHz and to realise very high system capacity per unit area. The partners will also develop new radio technologies to support different types of applications, including M2M services. Docomo said it will also work with other companies as it continues to test a wide range of 5G mobile technologies. The operator said 5G is expected to deploy commercially in 2020, with speeds of over 10Gbps and very high connectivity. Nokia said it and Docomo will together research and standardise 5G technologies and work jointly on a 5G proof of concept (PoC) system. The move builds on the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the two companies in January to research future radio access experimental systems. The companies will initially focus on exploring the potential of the millimeter wave technology at the 70 GHz spectrum band. The experimental 5G PoC system will be implemented using National Instrument's (NI) baseband modules which currently make up the system for rapid prototyping of 5G air interfaces.

Docomo to exit Indian market, sell TTSL stake
2014-04-25 09:21:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Japanese operator NTT Docomo has decided to sell its stake in Indian mobile operator Tata Teleservices. Docomo expects to be able to sell its 26.5 percent stake to India's Tata group, under an option in their original shareholders agreement from 2009. This requires Tata to buy the stake for 50 percent of the acquisition price (INR 72.5 billion) or a fair market price, whichever is higher, if Tata Teleservices fails to achieve certain performance targets by the end of its fiscal year in March 2014. Docomo said it intends to sell the stake in June if Tata's annual report shows it missed the targets.
