FOSSers Puzzle Over Significance of Open Source .Net Core

Microsoft last week released a preview of the next version of its .Net Core runtime distribution, fulfilling last fall's pledge to open source .Net and take it cross-platform for Mac and Linux. "Windows 10 is and will be a standard .Net platform, and improving the interoperability of .Net builds bridges from those platforms to Windows 10," said Black Duck Software's Bill Weinberg.

FCC Chairman on why lawsuits won't beat net neutrality this time
2015-05-04 22:37:15| IT Services - Topix.net
Companies have been gunning for the FCC's open internet rules since the very moment news crossed the wires, and their latest move involved pushing for a stay -- a sort of legal "not so fast!" -- on the classification of the internet as a public utility. While visiting TechCrunch Disrupt in New York this morning, FCC chairman Tom Wheeler reaffirmed his belief in a victory for the internet, saying he was "pretty confident" in the outcome of the cases and that his plan for now was simply "not to lose".

US operators ask FCC to stay net neutrality rules
2015-05-02 01:31:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) USTelecom, AT&T, CenturyLink, CTIA-the Wireless Association and the Wireless Internet Service Providers Association have asked the Federal Communications Commission to stay its action placing broadband internet access service under Title II public utility regulation. The operators and industry associations have already filed lawsuits in an attempt to halt the FCC's new net neutrality rules, which open up broadband service to the same regulation as telephony. They now want the Commission to review the plans to subject broadband providers to Title II common carrier obligations, as well as the newly created internet conduct standard that would allow the FCC to decide what new services carriers could offer. Their petition claims the new rules create "enormous uncertainty" about what kind of services broadband providers can offer, as well as result in new costs and "substantial harm" to operations, especially for small ISPs.
