NIST announced a competition to award its first manufacturing innovation institutes that will join the nine already underway as part of the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation. Competition will award one institute using fiscal year 2016 funds and one or more using fiscal year 2017 funds. Each institute award is in the form of a cooperative agreement that provides up to $70 million in federal support over a 5-year period and requires matching funds from non-federal sources.

NIST Celebrates Cybersecurity Framework's two years of success.

Two years ago, NIST released Cybersecurity Framework. That document, designed to help strengthen cybersecurity at organizations that manage critical national infrastructure, was produced after one year of intense collaboration with industry. Currently, this tool is used by 30% of U.S. organizations, and that number is projected to reach 50% by 2020. In addition to private organizations in other countries, other governments use it as foundation for their national cybersecurity guidelines.

NIST has announced new round of financial support for developing undergraduate- and graduate-level curricula that integrate standards and standardization information and content into learning resources, courses, and seminars at U.S. colleges and universities. Accredited institutions of higher education, both nonprofit and commercial organizations; and state, local, and Indian tribal governments located in the United States and its territories are eligible.

FY 2017 Budget Request for NIST supports HPC, biomanufacturing.

U.S. Department of Commerce released details of President Obama's budget request for fiscal year 2017 for NIST. Total discretionary request for NIST is $1 billion – $50.5 million increase over FY 2016 enacted level – will support research in such areas as computing, advanced communications, and manufacturing (including biomanufacturing). According to NIST Director Willie E. May, "The requested funds will help NIST continue to push the frontiers of measurement science."

NIST announces new round of SBIR program grants.

NIST Small Business Innovation Research program is announcing that its FY 2016 Federal Funding Opportunity is open. SBIR is a competitive program that encourages domestic small businesses to engage in federally funded research and development opportunities that have potential for commercialization. Phase I is used to determine the technical feasibility of the research and will close on April 14, 2016. Awards of up to $100,000 are given.
