Allen Adler and Waguih Ishak have joined NIST's Visiting Committee on Advanced Technology, agency's primary private-sector policy advisory group. Adler is vice president of Enterprise Technology Strategy for The Boeing Company. He leads strategic planning for technology, setting research priorities and fostering enterprise-wide collaboration. Ishak joined Corning in 2007 to establish the Corning West Technology Center, where he is vice president and director of Science and Technology Division.

NIST performs measurements for James Webb Space Telescope.

NIST has accurately measured parts designed for the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope, the successor to the Hubble Space Telescope. NIST mechanical engineer John Stoup and his colleagues performed measurements of 4 alignment mounts that support and help to position a major Webb telescope structure known as the Primary Mirror Backplane Support Structure. Structure will hold telescope’s 21 ft diameter mirror as well as approximately 5,300 lb of telescope’s instruments and optical components.

NIST seeks comments on computer security publication.

NIST is seeking public comment on its latest draft of a publication intended to help computer security experts use randomness to protect sensitive data. Second Draft of Special Publication (SP) 800-90B, Recommendation for the Entropy Sources Used for Random Bit Generation, aims to help security specialists judge whether source of random numbers they use as part of data encryption process is sufficiently unpredictable. NIST is requesting public comments by May 9, 2016.

NIST launches national competition to make robots more agile.

NIST is launching ARIAC—the Agile Robotics for Industrial Automation Competition, a joint effort with IEEE Conference on Automation Science and Engineering. Simulation-based competition aims to inspire applications of the latest advances in artificial intelligence and other technologies to solve the challenge of making robots more capable, versatile, and collaborative, as well as easier to program. Solutions will be demonstrated in computer model of real-world manufacturing operation.
