NIST Security Standard can protect credit cards.
2016-03-31 14:31:15| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today
NIST Special Publication 800-38G, Recommendation for Block Cipher Modes of Operation: Methods for Format-Preserving Encryption, specifies two techniques, called FF1 and FF3, for "format-preserving encryption," or FPE. While the main commercial impetus for developing these techniques is credit card number encryption, another potential application is the anonymizing of personally identifiable information from databases, particularly those containing sensitive medical information.

NIST Optomechanical Transducer links sound, light, radio waves.
2016-03-30 14:31:08| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today
Published in Nature Photonics, researchers at NIST developed "piezo-optomechanical circuit" that converts signals among optical, acoustic, and radio waves. According to one of said paper's co-authors, Kartik Srinivasan, this device might enable detailed studies of interactions and foster development of phononic circuitry that can be modified with photons. "This work," said Srinivasan, "presents one platform for transducing information between different carriers."
NIST Publishes Analysis of Cybersecurity Framework comments.
2016-03-29 14:31:08| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today
NIST published analysis of feedback from critical-infrastructure leaders and others on voluntary, federally led Cybersecurity Framework. Comments included within "Analysis of Cybersecurity Framework RFI Responses" affirm frameworks' current uses, recommend refinements, and suggest future directions. There are 10 recurring themes among responses, and analysis, in addition to explaining each, offers associated key terms and example responses.

ASTM, NIST, OSAC offer free access to forensic science standards.
2016-03-25 13:31:09| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today
Agreement involving ASTM International, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and Organization of Scientific Area Committees (OSAC) for Forensic Science enables ~30,000 public criminal justice agencies to receive free access to forensic science standards. Effective last week, contract supports access to near 50 standards – guides, practices, test methods, and more – developed by ASTM Committee E30 on Forensic Science to aid forensics-related activities.

NIST develops measurement standard for breast cancer MRI.
2016-03-24 13:31:09| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today
Researchers at NIST have developed the first widely useful standard for magnetic resonance imaging of the breast. NIST phantom will help standardize MRIs of breast tissue and ensure quality control in comparing images within and between medical research studies. Phantom mimics response of human tissue to help test performance of medical imaging systems. It supports quantitative MRI, which is increasingly used for breast cancer diagnosis, staging, and treatment monitoring.
