NIST Experiment adds to quantum computing capabilities.
2015-12-22 14:31:10| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today
Experiment performed by physicists at NIST, as described in "Multi-element logic gates for trapped ion qubits" in December 17, 2015 issue of Nature, involved manipulation of one magnesium and one beryllium ion (charged atom) confined in custom trap. Using 2 sets of laser beams to entangle 2 ions, scientists also performed 2 types of logic operations: a controlled NOT (CNOT) gate and SWAP gate. Possible applications include performing logic operations for quantum computers.

NIST presents 2015 awards to outstanding employees.
2015-12-21 14:31:09| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today
NIST recognized current and former employees for their research, administrative, and support activities that support NIST’s mission in a ceremony Dec 9, 2015. Their efforts help NIST promote innovation with collaborations and research that bring advances to fields such as nanotechnology, cybersecurity, and health care. Recipients of the U.S. Department of Commerce Gold and Silver medals, who received their awards in a separate ceremony earlier this year, were also recognized.

NIST Lab Building renamed for Katharine Blodgett Gebbie.
2015-12-18 14:31:13| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today
On Dec. 10, 2015, the most advanced laboratory building at the NIST campus in Boulder, CO, was renamed after legendary NIST laboratory director Katharine Blodgett Gebbie. Currently a NIST senior advisor, Gebbie is an astrophysicist by training and has worked for NIST for more than 45 years. She directed 2 large NIST operating units of several hundred researchers each. Under her leadership, NIST staff won 4 Nobel Prizes in Physics from 1997–2012 as well as 2 MacArthur Fellowships.

NIST Seminar to cover balance and scale calibration.
2015-12-17 14:31:06| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today
Scheduled for January 19–21, 2016, NIST Seminar will cover calibration and use of analytical weighing instruments, including sources of weighing errors in analytical environments, methodologies for quantifying errors, and computation of balance calibration uncertainty and global (user) uncertainty. Approximately 50% of the time will be spent doing hands-on exercises. Focus will then move to use of balances in analytical and regulatory environments.
