NIST Guide explains community resilience investment evaluations.
2016-01-06 14:31:06| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today
Prepared by NIST economists, Community Resilience Economic Decision Guide for Buildings and Infrastructure Systems details steps for evaluating economic ramifications of resilience investments as well as maintaining status quo. Six-step process helps communities improve resilience by setting priorities and allocating resources to manage risks for prevailing hazards. Economic guide provides basis for comparing and contrasting alternate investments during development of the resilience plan.

NIST Researchers demonstrate squeezed motion, measurement.
2015-12-29 14:31:07| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today
Earlier in 2015, NIST researchers reported they could accurately measure "zero-point" motion of tiny metal membrane cooled near absolute zero. The same team, in "Quantum Nondemolition Measurement of a Nonclassical State of a Massive Object," demonstrated later that the state of such a membrane’s motion can be squeezed, and that said squeezing can be independently and continuously measured.

NIST Math App helps manage mashups.
2015-12-29 14:31:07| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today
Scientists at NIST are helping to create recipe for new lightweight materials used for aircraft, cars, and windmills using tiny nanoparticles. Team took idea from 7-decade-old math paper by Shizuo Kakutani, who suggested a way of modeling particle shapes in material property calculations. Team first created virtual nanoparticles that have same physical shape as real-world particles they want to analyze, and then calculated relevant properties using ZENO software package developed partly at NIST.
NIST Issues Notice of manufacturing innovation institute funding.
2015-12-28 14:31:10| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today
Notice of Intent, issued by NIST, pertains to funding of up to 2 institutes as part of National Network for Manufacturing Innovation (NNMI). For its first institutes, Commerce Department will provide up to $70 million per institute over 5–7 years. Both institutes are expected to become self-sustainable within established time period of said award. According to NIST Director Willie E. May, "Each institute serves as a regional hub of manufacturing excellence."

NIST Researchers measure and modulate trapped light.
2015-12-28 14:31:10| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today
Researchers working at NIST have developed novel way to non-invasively measure and map how and where trapped light vibrates within microscale optical resonators. New technique not only makes for more accurate measurements but also allows scientists to fine-tune trapped light’s frequency by subtly altering shape of resonator itself. Visualizing vibration patterns will help scientists to perfect ultrasensitive optical sensors for detecting biomolecules and even single atoms.
