ASHRAE funds 24 Undergraduate Projects.

This year, 24 schools from around the world were awarded ASHRAE Undergraduate Senior Project Grants. Totaling some $110,000, grants are awarded by ASHRAE to colleges and universities worldwide to promote the study and teaching of HVAC&R, encouraging senior undergraduate students to pursue related careers. Grants are used to design and construct projects, such as The University of Alabama’s proposal to use an unmanned aerial vehicle to document building energy audits.

ASHRAE offers course on variable refrigerant flow.

One of 11 offerings in ASHRAE's Spring Online Course series, Variable Refrigerant Flow System Design & Application will take place May 16. Course provides non-manufacturer specific concepts of how to apply VRF systems to buildings. It will supplement the fundamental technology introduction presented in the 2012 ASHRAE Handbook, HVAC Systems and Equipment. Course is geared toward consulting engineers, HVAC system designers, and facility engineers.

ASHRAE helped fund events at U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon, which took place October 8–18, 2015 and challenged collegiate teams to design, build, and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient, and attractive. ASHRAE's Ginger Scoggins and Michael J. Brandemuehl served as judges, and Stevens Institute of Technology won top honors overall by sweeping all 4 juried categories. Also, ASHRAE sponsored lunch for teams based in its Region X.

Exceeding records from past 8 Winter Conferences (except Las Vegas 2011), there were 3,000+ people, hailing from 67 countries, who attended 2016 ASHRAE Winter Conference in Orlando, FL from January 23–27. AHR Expo, held January 25–27, 2016, was co-sponsored by ASHRAE and set exhibitor space record by being first show outside of Chicago to break 400,000 ft². It featured 2,063 exhibitors (561 deemed international), and total visitor attendance was 42,672.

ASHRAE Calls for Papers for 2017 Winter Conference.

ASHRAE issued call for papers for 2017 Winter Conference in Las Vegas, NV (January 28 to February 1, 2017). Specifically, papers are being sought on conference's new tracks as well as other prevailing industry issues. These include rate of technology advancement, climate change, mission-critical design and operation advances, and more. Abstracts for conference papers are due March 14, 2016, while full technical papers are due April 18, 2016.
