ASHRAE recognizes innovative buildings.

ASHRAE Technology Awards recognize outstanding achievements by members who have successfully applied innovative building design. Their designs incorporate ASHRAE standards for effective energy management and indoor air quality. Wind turbines, subcooled glycol/water, geothermal wells, reuse of coil condensation water, and a central heat pump water heating system are among the innovative measures used in the 5 buildings receiving the awards.

House Disappoints ASHRAE with language passed in H.R. 8.

While expressing disappointment with passage of North American Energy Security and Infrastructure Act of 2015 (H.R. 8) by U.S. House of Representatives, ASHRAE President David Underwood applauded Representative Peter Welch (D-VT-At Large) for seeking to amend H.R. 8's harmful building energy codes language with language from bipartisan H.R. 2177. He referred specifically to language that threatens to reduce understanding of potential full impacts of model building energy codes.

Guidance On Low-GWP Refrigerants presented at ASHRAE conference.

Challenges facing hot countries regarding finding refrigerant alternatives for HCFC-22 in residential air-conditioning will be discussed in seminar chaired by Walid Chakroun at ASHRAE 2016 Winter Conference, which will take place January 23–27, 2016 in Orlando, FL.  Technical Program will feature 8 tracks, ~100 sessions, and 300+ speakers. Topics will include test outcomes and results comparison meant to explore possible workable refrigerant alternatives for high ambient operation.

ASHRAE seeks input on refrigerant safety standard addendum.

Industry input is being sought into proposal to modify portions of ASHRAE’s refrigeration safety standard to incorporate subclass 2L flammability classifications. ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 15-2013, Safety Standard for Refrigeration Systems, specifies safe design, construction, installation, and operation of refrigeration systems. It covers full range of applications from residential to commercial to industrial. Addendum d to standard is open for public comment until January 18, 2016.

ASHRAE Extends Paper Deadline, Seeks Presenters for IAQ 2016.

Papers are sought for IAQ 2016 Conference, "Defining Indoor Air Quality: Policy, Standards and Best Practices," which will take place September 12–14, 2016. Authors are invited to submit papers on topics appropriate to Conference theme, and abstracts are due December 14, 2015.  Upon acceptance, papers are due March 28, 2016. Abstracts are also invited for presentations and sessions that address the conference theme. These 400-word abstracts for 60 or 90 min sessions are due March 7, 2016.
