Intel wants to modernize data centers with new Xeon server chips

Intel has designed its latest server chips to provide the building blocks to modernize "legacy data centers" by providing more processing cores, throughput, and power-saving features. The Xeon E5-2600 v3 chips are the company's fastest server chips to date, said Diane Bryant, senior vice president and general manager of Intel's Data Center Group, at a media event in San Francisco on Monday.

Late yesterday, Intel quietly announced one of the biggest ever changes to its chip lineup: It will soon offer a new type of Xeon CPU with an integrated FPGA. This new Xeon+FPGA chip will fit in the standard E5 LGA2011 socket, but the integrated FPGA will allow each chip to be customized to specific workloads. This move is almost certainly intended to make Intel-x86 a better all-round platform for a wider variety of workloads, and to dissuade customers from switching to GPGPU accelerators from the likes of Nvidia.

Intel integrates high-end PC graphics processors into Xeon server chips

Intel is integrating its latest graphics capabilities found in Haswell PC chips into new Xeon chips, as the company looks to improve the quality of graphics on mobile devices. Intel on Tuesday demonstrated Iris Pro graphics integrated in Xeon E3-1200 v3 Xeon processors, which are for low-end to midrange servers. Iris Pro graphics, found in Intel's high-end Core processors, is the chip maker's most advanced graphics technology, and is used in a few PCs that can handle full high-definition and 3D games.
