Instrument Engineer Space and Atmospheric Physics Group, Department of Physics South Kensington Campus Salary Range 34,720 42,830 per annum Fixed term one year We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated candidate to fill the post of Instrument Engineerwithin the Space and Atmospheric Physics Group at Imperial College London. Solar Orbiter is a European Space Agency ESA scientific satellite due for launch in 2018 and set to explore the nearSun environment by flying closer to the Sun than ever before. Imperial College London is responsible for the design, build, test, verification and operation of the magnetometer, an instrument which is central to the scientific goals of the mission and is due for delivery to ESA in 2016. The post holder will become an integral part of the Solar Orbiter magnetometer team, a group of 6 engineers and physicists responsible for the entire development and build programme. The post holders place in the team will be determined by the exact skill set of the successful applicant, but will involve taking responsibility for some of the following areas writing elements of flight software to control the instrument writing ground software to decode and analyse data from the instrument electronics test and verification Electrical andor Mechanical Support Equipment EMGSE design and build and electronics integration and assembly. The post holder will write and follow detailed procedures, clearly document all activities, and perform testing and trouble shooting, all to the required standards as applicable. The post holder will attend the verification tests for the assembled magnetometer, travelling to locations within the UK and other European countries. The post holder may also be required to represent the Magnetometer team to ESA as a representative on Solar Orbiter working groups. This post will involve a high degree of teamwork and interfacing with other institutions and organisations. A degree in engineering or physics, or a closely related discipline or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience is essential. Solar Orbiter is a European Space Agency ESA scientific satellite due for launch in 2018 and set to explore the nearSun environment by flying closer to the Sun than ever before. Imperial College London is responsible for the design, build, test, verification and operation of the magnetometer, an instrument which is central to the scientific goals of the mission and is due for delivery to ESA in 2016. The post holder will write and maintain software for the processing of magnetic field vectors from the magnetometer instrument. The software will unpack the raw instrument telemetry data files from the spacecraft and apply the calibration, coordinate transformations and timing information in order to produce data ready for scientific analysis. The postholder will also take responsibility for instrument operations planning, which is complex for the Solar Orbiter mission, requiring coordination between ten instrument teams. Specific responsibilities will include 1. Devising a data calibration and processing pipeline and taking responsibility for continued development of associated calibration software and analysis tools 2. Writing and implementing ground software to process data from the ESA operations centre 3. Becoming familiar with the magnetometer flight software, and writing patches as necessary 4. Liaising with the ESA operations team, writing command sequences and onboard control procedures 5. Maintaining the operations, commanding and patching sections of the instrument user manual This post will involve a high degree of teamwork and interfacing with other institutions and organisations and will require travel to meetings in the UK and continental Europe. A degree in engineering or physics, or a closely related discipline or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience is essential. Experience in one or more programming languages e.g. Perl, C is essential as is experience of writing andor maintaining a software pipeline or software modules for processing data.
