Tasks and Activities The scope of work will include Follow up the development and procurement of the IRS Quality Tools IQTS, its algorithms and associated tools Follow up the development and procurement of the IRS Payload Data Generator PDG Follow up the definition of the IRS algorithms for simulation, on board processing, and Level 1 ground processing Provide technical support to Satellite and Instrument reviews Provide support to the IRS calibration characterisation onground and inflight activities Provide support to the Validation Verification of the tools. Skills and Experience The following skills and experience are mandatory University degree Masters or higher or equivalent qualification in physics or engineering. At least 4 years experience in data processing of scientific instruments. Demonstrated experience in software packages such as C, IDL, Matlab. Overview The holder of this post will contribute to all aspects project internal activities and monitoringreview of the relevant industrial activities relevant to the system performance of the Biomass mission up to Level 1b TBC products in the context of the design and implementation activities undertaken in the frame of the Biomass Project. The post holder will report to the MTGI Product and System Manager, Earth Observation Projects Department. The Instrument Quality Tool Engineer will work in the MTG System Section and will cooperate closely with the Instrument Principal Engineer, the System Performance and INR engineer, and the technical support from DTEC where necessary. Specific qualification requirements University degree Masters or higher or equivalent qualification in physics or engineering with experience in data processing of scientific instruments. Proven experience in prototyping geometric performance models. Experience in Image Navigation and Registration filters would be an asset. Candidates shall demonstrate good experience with software packages such as C, IDL, Matlab. Ability to work and communicate effectively in English. Be able to work independently and also work with colleagues within a team. Legal and Security Requirements All applicants must be legally allowed to work in The Netherlands Applicants are required to provide a copy of their passport and degree certificate. Solar Orbiter is a European Space Agency ESA scientific satellite due for launch in 2018 and set to explore the nearSun environment by flying closer to the Sun than ever before. Imperial College London is responsible for the design, build, test, verification and operation of the magnetometer, an instrument which is central to the scientific goals of the mission and is due for delivery to ESA in 2016. The post holder will become an integral part of the Solar Orbiter magnetometer team, a group of 6 engineers and physicists responsible for the entire development and build programme. The post holders place in the team will be determined by the exact skill set of the successful applicant, but will involve taking responsibility for some of the following areas writing elements of flight software to control the instrument writing ground software to decode and analyse data from the instrument electronics test and verification Electrical andor Mechanical Support Equipment EMGSE design and build and electronics integration and assembly. The postholder will also take responsibility for instrument operations planning, which is complex for the Solar Orbiter mission, requiring coordination between ten instrument teams. Specific responsibilities will include 1. Devising a data calibration and processing pipeline and taking responsibility for continued development of associated calibration software and analysis tools 2. Writing and implementing ground software to process data from the ESA operations centre 3. Becoming familiar with the magnetometer flight software, and writing patches as necessary 4. Liaising with the ESA operations team, writing command sequences and onboard control procedures 5.
