Satellite System Engineer

Modis is looking for a skilled Satellite System Engineer for an opportunity at the European Space Agency in the Netherlands The main tasks to be performed Coordination of project teams which include space engineering professionals, university staff, and university students. Time will be shared between supporting launch campaigns and liasing with graduate tainees. Provide system engineering support to the project teams. Monitor the technical baseline of the relevant projects, and review the project documentation to ensure compliance with requirements, applicable standards, and good space engineering practice. Support and review the satellite AIV Assembly, Integration and Verification campaigns to be performed at the ESTEC test facilities, or at facilities located elsewhere, and the launch interfacing and campaigns to be supported also at the launch site, if needed. Support the preparation and conduct of project meetings, project reviews, test campaigns, and of workshops or conferences. Liaise with the Young Graduate Trainees involved in the satellite projects of the Education Office, and support the Head of the Tertiary Education Unit for their coordination. Liaise with the colleagues of the Education Office in charge of Outreach coordination, to the scope of supporting the outreach initiatives on the ESA education satellites. Offer support if requested by the Head of the Tertiary education Unit to other tertiary education projects. To successfully perform the above mentioned tasks, the following background experience is required Candidates must demonstrate a broad knowledge of system engineering skills in space systems, be well organized and show a good sense of initiative. Ability to coordinate work contributions effectively from several different parties, and shall possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all stakeholders ESA, industry, academia and students. Good previous experience in the technical supervision of space projects is required. Direct experience with small satellite systems development, testing, and mission operations would be an asset. A vacancy has arisen for an OnBoard Software Project Manager with Astrium in Stevenage. The Central Engineering technical unit for Data Processing OnBoard Software comprises transnational departments based in UK Stevenage and Portsmouth, France and Germany. The function of the technical unit is to provide a central competence that meet evolving needs of the business, working on satellite platforms, payloads and equipment. The key responsibilities of the role are as follows As part of the UK Central Engineering OnBoard Software Department, the successful candidate will initially be responsible for the onboard Software Project Management SPM of one of our central satellite onboard software developments. Depending on the size of project, the SPM may be involved in more than one project. The SPM shall master all applicable OBSW project management processes to ensure that all commitments are fully achieved with respect to the Customer deliverables the quality objectives. With particular involvement in the following depending on project needs Set up, lead, monitor, control and conclude software projects in respect of the organisation, the processes and the commitments requirements, quality, timescales and costs. Produce, monitor and maintain project schedule. Produce and maintain the development and maintenance plans supported by the Technical responsible. Contribute to the effectiveness of the organisation using the resources and skills from the appropriate specialised departments identify software team training needs. Lead the software development in an effective, coordinated and motivated fashion. Prepare, lead and conclude the project reviews and the Customer deliveries in close coordination with the Customer, the Technical responsible and the Software Quality Engineer, Lead the subcontracting process to select the companyies working on the project, to manage the subcontractor in coordination with the identified Software Production Responsible for the technical aspects, to close the contract technically at the end of the activities. Communication and reporting with the Project hierarchy, the direct Customer usually internal and when necessary with the final Customer. Prepare the project review documentation to report on software status to Project team department hierarchy. Produce project metrics and indicators collection, checking, analysis and publishing, Manage software changes definition, negotiation, decision. Anticipate potential difficulties by operational management mitigate the project risks. To deliver the OnBoard Software on quality, on time, on cost. The Software Project Manager is also expected to Be willing to travel work for short periods in Astrium offices in France or Germany attend reviews at Customer sites UK or Europe. Participate in ongoing implementation of transnational harmonisation of software tools, methods processes. Identify promote reuse of existing software functions or building blocks. Manage their own time and budgets in accordance with project and department requirements. Participate in workshops presentations within Astrium and Space Agency establishments. Participate in smaller software developments where the need for a fulltime project manager is not justified. Participate in proposal bids. The Department is involved in the complete lifecycle of activities relating to OnBoard Software development. These range from requirements capture, support to system engineering coengineering, design, implementation, verification and validation and maintenance. The software developed by this Department is of an embedded real time nature. Software is deployed within the Satellite, and Satellite Instrumentation, to provide the required Functionality and Control. Typically, the software would be designed using UML Coded in the ANSIC language Contain a number of hardware interface drivers and incorporate the use of a Realtime Operating System. Its application elements would normally include Telemetry Telecommand communications Attitude and Orbit Control Systems Mode control management, thermal power management, and Health MonitoringReporting. Specialist applications will depend on the mission. The Research and Development activities ensure the Department maintains its breadth and depth of knowledge and takes advantage of advancing technologies that meet the constraints of demanding space environments. RD studies typically include software architectures and the suitability of new processors and operating systems for use in space. Also covered are studies on new tools and methods to ensure ongoing improvements and competitive advantage. Other departmental work may also include supporting the preparation of technical proposals in response to space agencies or other funding institutions. The successful candidate will demonstrate the following skills and experience Excellent relevant handson experience obtained in an embedded Software engineering or closely affiliated domain Technical Software Project Management experience underpinned by formal methodology process Experience of managing projects to committed budget On Quality, On Time, On Cost Extensive project management and team management experience Desirable experience Experience in the satellitespace or avionics industry. Use of requirements capture tools e.g. DOORS.
