In May last year, long-struggling operator Digicel filed for bankruptcy, citing $7.4 billion in ‘unsustainable debts’. Now, the company is looking to rapidly offload its mobile phone networks across the Pacific region, including in Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Tonga and Samoa.   But potential buyers could be problematic on a political level. German govt approves IT security law with new checks on telecom equipment

(Telecompaper) The German government has approved the draft Law to improve security for Information Technology Systems, also called the IT Security Law 2.0. Proposed by the Interior Ministry, the law regulates the protection of the federal administration, critical infrastructure such as telecom networks, companies with a special public interest and related consumer protections. It notably outlines new criteria for the security of telecom networks, introducing a certification regime for critical elements.

Zimbabwean govt allocates USD 89 mln to improve ICT infrastructure in 2021 .

(Telecompaper) Zimbabwean Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube has announced that the government has allocated USD 89 million to the ICT sector for next year, with infrastructure improvement a priority, BiztechAfrica reported. Ncube said during the 2021 national budget presentation that progress has been made in the past decade to improve ICT infrastructure, the country's digital economy is still lagging behind, mainly because of poor connectivity.
