An American nurse who was exposed to the Ebola virus while volunteering in Sierra Leone is being admitted to the National Institutes of Health near Washington, D.C. The NIH says in a statement that the nurse was expected to be admitted to the Bethesda, Maryland, facility on Thursday. The NIH says the nurse has not tested positive for the deadly virus.

A top health official says he's "encouraged" by a $5.4 billion spending plan proposed by Congress to fight Ebola. The director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Tom Frieden, said Wednesday the United States must protect itself from the deadly virus by stopping an ongoing outbreak in West Africa.

Rome, December 10 - Global companies STMicroelectronics and Clonit, and Italy's National Institute for Infectious Diseases Lazzaro Spallanzani have developed an rapid, portable Ebola virus tester, a media statement released on Wednesday announced. According to the statement, the portable analyzer kit detects the presence of the Ebola virus "with extreme accuracy in just a few microliters of human-blood samples" within 75 minutes.
