We are currently looking for an Avionics System Engineer to support our customer in Germany. Avionics System Engineer Key Tasks and Responsibilities Our customer is a European leader in exciting and technologically sophisticated projects in the areas of space transportation and satellites. In this role you will have the following responsibilities Analysis of customer requirements and translating these into avionics components and architectures Definition and compatibility analysis of electrical interfaces and related documentation Definition of verification and validation approach Electrical Interface analysis and budget calculation Support for configuration management Planning and Managing of avionics design, development, manufacturing and test Support for proposals including analysis of customer requirements, preparation and description of technical concepts, generation of work package descriptions, and the calculations Specification, verification and test of space communication systems and components Detailed analysis and budget calculation of space communication. Skills Experience You will have the following qualifications and relevant experience University degree or equivalent in electrical engineering or computer science Several years experience in a similar role Several years experience in the development, manufacturing, test and usage of complex electronic systems and components Knowledge of requirements based engineering and work package calculation and preparation Knowledge of space specific processes and standard e.g. ECSS Knowledge of real time operating systems and programming Detailed knowledge of communication systems used for space application Knowledge of the OSI reference model for open communications Knowledge of digital communication standards Knowledge of mechanical Design of Avionics equipments Working knowledge of DOORS Fluency in English and German is mandatory knowledge of French desired. This post is classified in the A2A4 grade band of the Coordinated Organisations salary scale. LOCATION ESTEC, Noordwijk Netherlands. DUTIES The postholder reports directly to the Head of the ISS System Development Unit and is responsible for avionics aspects related to the enhancement, evolution and sustaining engineering of the ESA systems at the International Space Station. Specific duties will include defining and implementing the enhancement and evolution activities related to the Columbus system and equipment in the avionics area leading the procurement of Columbus avionics spares existing or of new design. Performing necessary equipment software upgrades supporting the realtime resolution of onorbit issues associated to the Columbus system and avionics equipment. When possible, performing offline troubleshooting for onorbit Columbus system and avionics equipment which has been declared nonoperational performing repairs of the Columbus system and avionics equipment leading the execution of the technical activities related to the ISS lifetime extension for the avionics aspects providing support to the Class 2 Payload integration for items interfacing directly with the system in the avionics area overseeing the development of the avionics aspects of the communications terminal of the Columbus Communications enhancement system service internal and external portions supporting the ESA ISS Engineering Board, the Mission Management Team MMT, the JointMMT, and the IOT JointEngineering Control Board, as required supporting the HSOID Division in other tasks, as required. QUALIFICATIONS Applicants for this post should have a Masters degree or equivalent qualification in physics or engineering. A thorough knowledge of human space flight systems and of the Space Station programme is also essential. Previous experience with international cooperation will be an asset. A high degree of knowledge and experience in the following areas is desirable avionics, including communications aspects the Columbus systems and equipment Space Station operations and integration processes the interaction of the Columbus Systems with the rest of the Space Station. The post requires candidates to be systemminded and to have a resultoriented approach. They should have the ability to work in a highly complex project environment, as well as have a strong capacity for planning and organising tasks. They should possess good communications skills and the capability of coordinating activities with groups spread across different sites. The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these two languages is required together with a working knowledge of the other language. Knowledge of another member state language is an asset. The successful candidate will join one of the largest space systems groups in Europe under the guidance of Professor Vaios Lappas. One of SSCs projects is RemoveDebris, expected to demonstrate the first successful capture of debris in space utilising a net and harpoon. The Research Fellow is expected to additionally work on other related ESA, EU and industrially funded space projects. This 12 month post ideally requires somebody with 3 years experience in CubeSat microsatellite bussubsystem design. The candidate will have good knowledge of ADCS AOCS, communication systems, EPS power systems, solar panels, OBCs, thermal systems, systems integration and ideally will have worked on an active satellite mission in this capacity. In addition, the candidate will have knowledge of procurement, manufacture, experimental setup, testing and some knowledge on assembly, integration, testing AIT.
