JOB DESCRIPTION The objective of the service support to be provided is to continue development of the Herschel Science Data Processing system by designing, implementing, maintaining, testing and documenting data analysis modules written in Java and Jython. This software is developed jointly between ESA, the three Herschel instrument teams and the NASA Herschel Science Center, with ESA coordinating the overall development and providing the framework within which the instrument teams can develop and optimise instrumentspecific data reduction algorithms. The Herschel Data Processing System provides applications to generate standard pipeline products and to analyse Herschel data interactively HIPE. The software is open source and it distributed to the astronomical community httpherschel.esac.esa.inthipe. Responsibilities Duties Tasks Specific tasks beyond generalpurpose software development include Development and maintenance of the Herschel standard product generation SPG and quality control framework. This framework is used for processing for all Herschel data Graphical user interface GUI development and maintenance Development and maintenance of the Herschel interactive analysis system. This system is used by the astronomical community to exploit Herschel data in detail Development and maintenance of data structures, including accessing them locally and from object oriented and relational databases Development and maintenance of numerical libraries Setting up and providing access to webservices working in the VO context Writing and maintenance of documentation Provision and maintenance of test harnesses Support of the data processing technical assistants when running the operational environment to generate Herschel standard products. Qualifications A university degree in computer science, physics, electronic engineering, or equivalent. System Software Engineering support for Long Term Archive 1313081 Job Description As a member of the Generic and Systems Infrastructure Division GSI, the key person shall provide support to the development and maintenance of the EUMETSAT Data Centre Archive and will be integrated within the Data Services Engineering Team. The duties range from the support to the operation of the UNIXbased archive and retrieval system, to the analysis, design, development testing and maintenance of software functions maintained developed within the data services engineering team. This includes the settingup and implementation of maintenance policies and procedures, the support to the procurement of hardware and software, and the coordination with external providers of maintenance services as required. The particular focus on the tasks to be performed are the operational support, the software configuration management and the design, implementation and testing of software corrections and evolutions for meteorological data format conversions offered by the Data Centre. In particular the tasks will include Operational Support for responsible data services systems Monitoring the performance and behavior. Problem Investigation and anomaly raising. System Maintenance Skills Extensive experience in the provision of first line support for operational systems, which includes the monitoring of the performance, problem investigation, coordination of resolutions and oncall support. Experience in the usage of hierarchical storage management systems preferred SAMfs and big data processing and management of the volumes. Software Engineering Skills Extensive experience in designing and developing software components and applications in the Java programming language under Unix Sun Solaris, Linux using Object Oriented OO approach including design patterns. The focus on the programming languages is Java but maintenance of existing software developed in CC is also needed when required. Extensive experience in developing software applications using interfaces to relational database management systems RDBMS and management of their schema.
