D7986, Practice for Preparing Specimens of Hydraulic Erosion Control Products for Index Property Testing, is the first step toward quantifying physical properties of hydraulic erosion control products in a laboratory. Sprayed on the ground as mulch, HECPs are a newer type of product that both protect against erosion and help establish vegetation. Standard will help determine the critical properties of HECPs that can be used to ensure that construction sites are using quality products.

ASTM International Committee G03 on Weathering and Durability has presented the Warren D. Ketola Award to Norma D. Searle, Ph.D., a consultant in photochemistry and weathering of polymeric and other nonmetallic materials. Committee specifically noted Searle’s numerous contributions to the development of standards to help the industry better understand weathering effects. Searle is a graduate of Hunter College of the City University of New York and has been a member of ASTM and G03 since 1984.

Consultant Rob Haddock of the Metal Roof Advisory Group Ltd. and Metal Roof Innovations Ltd. has received the Carl G. Cash Award from ASTM International Committee D08 on Roofing and Waterproofing. Committee noted Haddock’s distinguished research contributions, outstanding publications, dedication and leadership to advancing building envelope technology, and particularly performance of metal roofing systems. He has served on ASTM Committee E06 on Performance of Buildings since 1990.

ASTM Standard supports use of silica in tires.

ASTM's standard D8016, Test Method for Silica, Precipitated, Hydrated — Sears Number, will be used to test quality of silica, a raw material that forms the base for "greener" tires. According to ASTM member Jorge Lacayo-Pineda, silica technology improves performance in tire-rolling resistance without deterioration in braking performance. This leads to better fuel efficiency, as well as reduction in carbon dioxide emission in cars.

ASTM International becomes IACET Accredited Provider.

ASTM International was awarded Accredited Provider status by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training. IACET Accredited Providers are the only organizations approved to offer IACET Continuing Education Units. To achieve status, ASTM completed rigorous application process, including review by IACET site visitor, and successfully demonstrated adherence to ANSI/IACET 1-2007 Standard addressing design, development, administration, and evaluation of its programs.
