Job description For our customer, the European Space Agency ESA, we are seeking an experienced Ground Segment System Engineer to work at ESAs ESTEC site in Noordwijk, The Netherlands. Responsibilities You will be assigned to ESAESTEC in support of the EUESA Galileo projects Control Segment GCS Procurement office reporting day to day to the Control Segment Technical Manager. The support covers the transition and adaptation from Galileo First Generation G1G to Galileo Second Generation G2G with the following tasks Support the adaptation of the G1G Ground Control Segment for the G2G Batch 1 satellites Requirements definition for GCS adaptation to G2G satellites. Specification of the design upgrades to G2G block A and B. Assessment of the design upgrade options to G2G block A and B. Technical support to the procurement of the G2G Ground Segment activities Support to Segment and Element reviews. Contribution to design activities at segment level architecture, performances, common services in particular on the GCS Segment services and Security functions. Contribution to Segment change request production and review. Contribution to the assessment of Request For Deviation and Waivers. Contribution to Cyber Security watch policy and vulnerability corrections. GCS Assembly, Integration and Verification AIV engineering Technical contribution to GCS onsite AIV activities. Support review of test procedures. Witnessing test campaigns aiming at segment integration verification, external interface verification and overall segment validation. Coordinate and support Test Readiness Reviews and Test Readiness Board campaigns. Coordinate GCS functional and design requirements process verification testing including participation to the Verification Control Boards. Coordinate GCS compliance to the applicable requirements verification by the Prime Contractor during planned test campaigns either at element or system level. Technical contribution to the Ground Segment GCS to Galileo Mission Segment Integration and Verification Test Campaigns. Report any design or functional requirement issues arising during the AIV campaigns to the GCS Technical Manager. Support to aspects of security in Galileo Data Systems. This support will be provided under the scope of the functional support provided to Galileo by ESAs Mission Operations Data Systems Division located in ESOC, Germany. The division specifies, develops, implements and maintains all common technical infrastructure and missiondedicated data systems required for operations. This covers mission control systems, mission planning systems, simulators, and new types of data processing systems as necessary. Cooperation and liaison with the wider division is therefore expected. Upon request of the Agency these services may also be delivered to other ESA missions. This is a fulltime position located at ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands. The requested start of work is October 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter. Qualifications Competencies The successful candidate shall have A Masters Degree in Space Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Software Engineering, or equivalent. A minimum of 4 years of relevant professional working experience gained in space ground systems development, testing and verification, and operations. Experience in the development and maintenance of large software projects with use of appropriate tools e.g. DOORS for requirements management, HPQC for test management. Knowledge of ground system tools used with ESA e.g. SCOS2000, SIMSAT, EGOS MPS, EGSCC as used by many ESA projects. An understanding of spacecraft subsystems with kknowledge space system engineering. Knowledge of appropriate standards in ground systems development, in particular the ECSS E engineering and Q quality series. Soft skills Service orientation with an ability to work independently on own tasks, cooperate with a large project team, and capture the bigger picture and systems context. Excellent communications skills verbal and written with ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with industry and different areas within ESA. Ability to be flexible, show initiative, and have team spirit. Desirable For this position, knowledge of the Navigation domain, and prior knowledge of the Galileo project in particular, would be a distinct asset. Some experience in cybersecurity is an advantage. Where necessary nonlinear approaches and specific solution sequences shall be applieddeveloped e.g. Nastran SOL 600, Mecano, Abaqus. Perform the analysis, evaluate critically the results and issue relevant documentation covering all analysis steps. Support the generation and setup of mathematical models for structural elastic stability problems for Agency funded projects, taking into account specific requirements attached to this type of analysis. Perform stability analysis leading to the determination of buckling loads and deformations. Where necessary the post buckling behaviour shall be addressed, adequate nonlinear approaches used, and where relevant specific solution sequences shall be developed. Evaluate critically the results, and issue relevant documentation covering all analysis steps Support the generation and setup of mathematical models for structural thermoelastic stability problems for Agency funded projects, taking into account specific requirements attached to this type of analysis. Perform the interpolation of the temperature maps as resulting from thermal analysis for their employment in finite element structural analysis. Perform thermoelastic analysis leading to the determination of loads and deformations, evaluate the outcome in terms of margins of safety and stability budgets, evaluate critically the results and issue relevant documentation covering all analysis steps. Where necessary nonlinear approaches shall be considered and specific solution sequences shall be developed. Evaluate critically the results and the loads and issue relevant documentation. Structural Dynamics Analysis and Vibration Test Data Evaluation Support the generation and setup of structural dynamic mathematical models for spacecraft and launchers of Agency funded projects using the finite element method. Heshe shall take into account the specific objectives of such analysis and where necessary nonlinear approaches shall be considered and specific solution sequences e.g. Nastran DMAPS shall be developed. Perform the analysis modal, frequency and transient responses, random responses, preliminary inhouse launcher spacecraft coupled analysis, evaluate critically the results and issue relevant documentation covering all analysis steps. Produce advanced reduced models of spacecraft and launchers. Set up relevant documents and maintain all models and tools required to perform launcher spacecraft coupled loads analysis. Support the preparation and execution of mechanical tests modal survey, sine, random, acoustics, microvibration, shock, etc for spacecraft launchers of Agency projects by performing andor reviewing analytical predictions and procedures. Perform modal identification of the test data, evaluate critically the results and make usage of these results for updating structural finite element models. Perform assessments of shock response data. Take into account the specific objectives of such analyses and where necessary nonlinear analyses shall be performed and specific solution sequences shall be developed. Issue relevant documentation covering all analysis steps. Where applicable produce advanced reduced dynamic mathematical models. Skills and Experience The following skills and experience are mandatory A Masters degree or equivalent in mechanical or aeronautical engineering. At least 5 to 10 years experience in the space industry on the mechanical design, development and verification of space segment hardware. Relevant experience within the field of spacecraft and launcher structures design, analysis, verification and testing. Good knowledge in space system engineering, and space engineering standards ECSS. Knowledge and experience of structures numerical analysis tools such as Nastran, Patran, Abaqus, ESACRACK etc Good interpersonal and communication skills.
