For the location in Garching Germany we are looking for a Senior Software Engineer Science Operations Tasks The work involves maintenance and development of ETC applications for the VLT and VLT Interferometer VLTI within an existing CGI clientserver web application framework, in which the backend model and numerical calculation engine is implemented in C and the frontend mostly based on static HTML templates and some JavaScript. The activity will also include refurbishment and enhancements in particular in the C backend framework, towards establishing a dynamic interface to a new interactive singlepage web application frontend. The work will eventually include efforts in conversion and migration of the existing ETC applications to the new refurbished framework. Essential requirements The ideal Candidate is a software engineer with experience in developing numerical scientific applications in C and handling of scientific data and heshe should be used to work in a Unix Linux environment. Following skills are required University Degree in Computer Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering or equivalent Experience with web technologies, at least basic HTML and Ja vaScript Experience with software engineering practices and development tools, including version control, development environments and debuggers Desirable requirements Knowledge about observational astronomy, interferometry and astronomical instrumentation Working experience with web technologies, in particular HTML, CSS, JavaScript and related toolkits Experience with work on an existing software codebase in an international environment Some knowledge of scripting languages and Python Experience in code validation, unitregression testing Other Information Fluency in English is mandatory Start date July 2015

For the location in Garching Germany we are looking for a Software Engineer Science Operation Tasks The successful Candidate shall work on dataflow projects at the ESO headquarters. He or she will be assigned to the development, deployment and maintenance of various software tools for ESOs Science Archive Facility SAF. These tools include dynamic web applications for interactive exploration of the archive contents and for downloading archive assets. Reporting to the dataflow project manager and to the DFI group head, the Engineer will be assigned to the further development of the Science Archive Facility, following an agile, featuredriven development process. He or she is also expected to contribute to other activities in support of the Dataflow project team. This is an opportunity a qualified OperationsSystem Engineer to work in the space domain. This position is based in Germany, Darmstadt fully on customer side at ESOC. Summary An experienced JAVA software engineer to work for Telespazio VEGA onsite at ESAC to support Gaia Science Operations. Objective An exciting opportunity to work at ESAC, supporting, maintaining and testing systems for the Gaia mission. Responsibilities Duties The engineer will be part of the Gaia SOC AGIS team in close coordination the scientific community to develop the Global Iterative Solution into an operational system. Tasks will include but are not limited to 1. Development and integration of scientific algorithms Coding scientific algorithms in Java following detailed mathematical descriptions Integrating these algorithms into the AGIS framework Testing and validating new implemented functionality unit integration tests using simulation data Optimize new code in terms of memory CPU usage All activities will be supported by SOC personnel and collaborating external scientists. 2. Maintenance of existing code modules Analyse and resolve known deficiencies and inadequacies Issues of existing AGIS software modules Verify and validate that issues have been resolved usually in the form of extending existing tests andor conduction of new largescale tests. 3. System verification and scientific validation Aid in the definition, conduction and analysis of largescale testing campaigns including a first assessment of the scientific quality of results. Documenting results of test campaigns in the form of validation test reports 4. Aid in the creation of the first astrometric solution L22m Assist SOC personnel in all activities needed to generate the first astrometric solution with real flight data, such as Populating the operational AGIS processing DB with IDT and all needed auxiliary data Starting the AGIS run Monitoring the execution of the run from a technical and scientific viewpoint In case of problems, diagnose their cause and implement rectifying actions All activities will be supported by SOC personnel and collaborating external scientists. 5. Other Activities In addition to AGIS the Gaia SOC is responsible for operating and maintaining a number of other key systems like the Initial Data Treatment IDT or the central Gaia Tools Java Library. The engineer may be asked to support maintaining these systems in phases of manpower shortage. Qualifications Experience The service to be provided requires that the personnel should possess a university background in a scientific or technical subject and relevant professional experience of at least 5 years in software development.
