Polyester fiber prices have begun dropping in China in May, triggering a fall of 100% polyester yarn prices. Fiber and yarn prices have remained firm in India before now receding on the domestic market. Margins are moving into different directions depending on months and countries with June offering a radically new picture. Polyester chain prices have stayed relatively firm in the last week, with PTA and MEG even slightly recovering in the last days. Demand is bottoming out from textile producers after polyester prices have fallen to very competitive levels. Our weekly report covers the polyester chain in Asia, including PX (paraxylene), PTA (purified terephthalic acid), MEG (mono-ethylene glycol), polyester chips, and polyester staple and filament prices. Viscose fiber prices have further declined in the last seven days in China. From a year earlier, VSF prices have sharply declined whereas material costs were not as heavily falling. The viscose industry is therefore in turmoil in China. Our weekly report covers the viscose/rayon staple fiber and filament markets over the last 12 months. Polyester fiber prices have bottomed out in China, over a sharp decline of inventories at fiber plants. Lower operating rates are also supporting staple fiber and filament prices. With material costs further dropping however, any rebound in prices could be short-lived.
