Key Tasks and Responsibilities As part of the Remote Sensing and Products Division, you will have the following responsibilities Specification and prototyping of new processing concepts for altimeter processing chains, in particular addressing Synthetic Aperture RadarDelayed Doppler altimetry Specification and prototyping of evolutions of the altimeter processing chains Contributing to operational processor evolution and maintenance activities Validation of altimetry prototype and operational products Quality assessment and monitoring of altimetry products Supporting the commissioning and calval of altimetry missions. Therefore the institute develops pioneering technology and advanced space instruments, and uses them to pursue fundamental astrophysical research, Earth science and exoplanetary research. As national expertise institute SRON gives counsel to the Dutch government and coordinates national contributions to international space missions. SRON stimulates the implementation of space science in our society. The expertise group Instrument Science has a vacancy for an Optical Instrument scientist fm Vac. nr. 1580 You will be part of the Instrument Science Group where optical experts contribute to space instruments ranging from Earth Observation and Exoplanet characterization in the visible and near infrared wavelength bands, to cryogenically cooled instruments for astrophysics in the far infrared. Project Within the climate and air quality program of SRON, you will work on the development of novel optical instrumentation for Earth Observation to contribute to the measurement of CO2 and aerosol from space. Your responsibility will be in the predevelopment and testing of spectrometers and polarimeters for space. You will develop test setups and contribute to onground calibration of these optical instruments and perform the characterization of CMOSbased detectors. You will work in a diverse team together with space industry and knowledge institute team members. SRON projects are carried out in Dutch national context in collaboration with international space industry and agencies. Tasks The candidate will perform the following tasks Develop and build a test setup for the verification of a spectropolarimeter Test CMOSbased detector module developed for next generation space spectropolarimeter Participate in spectropolarimeter optical performance tests Analyze optical performance test results Present results in documents and in presentations Scientific reporting on results obtained. Profile The candidate shall meet most of the following requirements Master of science level, a Ph.D. degree in applied Physics or an equivalent discipline is preferred Experience in design, tolerancing and use of optical test setups Experience with optical design software Zemax, CodeV or similar Good knowledge of optical materials, production techniques of optical components, and optomechanical concepts Knowledge of electrooptic aspects of CMOS detectors Experience with analysis of the performance of an optical instrument Gogetter, selfstarter, communicator.
