Job Description Our team is involved in establishing the requirements, overall system design and validation and assurance of the next generation satellite systems ranging from newspace LEO constellations of Small and Nanosats through to GEO High Throughput Satellites. We are developing open and flexible system architectures that bring together cuttingedge technology and innovation from different communications sectors including 5G and Optical communications. Our team are also applying industry best practice to create responsive and agile satellite operations to support our commercial and military customers in the most challenging of environments. We are expanding our team particularly in respect of the Space Segment and next generation Satellite Payloads and are seeking a Senior Satellite Communications Systems Consultant to assist with the requirements development, architectural design and modelling and validationassurance of complex commercial and military satcom networks and their supported communications services. Key Responsibilities Develop, manage and maintain space and ground segment requirements for LEO, MEO and GEO based satcom systems Carry out requirement decomposition, modelling and tradeoff analysis to establish requirements for satellite payloads and overall networks based, on end user needs Develop system and service architectures for next generation LEO and MEO constellation space segments to support high and low data rate satcom networks Using a Model Based Systems Engineering Approach over the System Development Lifecycle Develop and maintain link budgets using basic and more advanced modelbased techniques Undertake toplevel capacity design and performance analysis of satellite communications payloads, networks and related communications services Contribute to the highlevel system design of satellite network constellations including GEO, MEO and LEO satellites Simulation of satellite communications networks and payloads in support of the above Ensure satellite payload and network design adherence to appropriate standards and ITU regulations Attend, and constructively contribute to, meetings with e2Es customers and partners Undertake other appropriate duties as directed by e2Es authorised managers Skills, Character and Experience Experience of working as an integral part of a highly focused Systems Engineering team Track record of taking full responsibility for the delivery of critical system components Evidence of being able to develop innovative and efficient solutions to defined problems whilst working within tight timescale and budgetary constraints Proven ability to produce clear, concise and unambiguous documentation confirming to applicable technical and quality standards Good customerfacing and communication skills with ability to produce and present clear, concise and unambiguous presentations to customers and other clients Ability to influence senior stakeholders and gain consensus to drive through change. Essential UK national given potential UK defence work being carried out Security Cleared or ability to be security cleared Graduate with a good Honours or Masters degree in a relevant subject e.g. Electronics, communications. Equivalent qualifications andor experience can be considered as an alternative. 10 years of experience of Systems Engineering of satellite communications networks of which more than 5 years is relating to Satellite Payload and Space Segment Ability to establish network capacity and highlevel satellite payload and ground segment architectural requirements based on user needs Simulation and modelling of satellite networks in support of the above including both space and ground parts of the network Good understanding and experience of satellite communications network system design for LEO. MEO and GEO systems Experience of applying structured Systems Engineering approach to complex Satellite Systems programmes, including full understanding of throughlife Assurance and Acceptance activities. Knowledge of the resource planning and delivery of communications services over satellite networks. Knowledge of the operating framework used by satellite communications telecoms operators for service delivery e.g. ITIL or eTOM. Experience in design and assessing software, firmware and hardware solutions within an overall system design including transparent and regenerative payload designs Experience and knowledge of security architecture design principles and their application to system design. As a result, we seeking to add an experienced Satcom Communications Payload Engineer to support this Programme and to bring further understanding and experience of military satellite system design, manufacture and operations. Working very much as the coalface, the successful recruit will need to help the customer define the satellite system constellation and individual payload specifications, together with then assuring the satellite payload design and manufacture through the satellite manufacturing process. Key Responsibilities Working as part of a team to oversee and evaluate the design of the next generation satellite communications payload with experience particularly of working with UHF, Xband and Kaband operations. Understanding of military specific functions including response to stress RTS handling, signal detection and jamming. Communications payload hardware and software with experience of Digital Signal Processing DSP, FPGA firmware and embedded software. Liaising directly with the satellite manufacturers to oversee the payload configuration and ensure change management. Acting as the design authority for the communications payload subsystem serving as requirements manager and overall architecture manager. Responsible for reviewing the communications payload onboard and supporting ground systems. Responsible for evaluating performance including link budget and interference analysis Responsible for planning equipment reviews, conducting risk evaluation reviews of the major subsystem equipment and analysis related flight readiness test results. Coordinating with other satellite subsystem and ground support equipment managers. Preparing for and attending major project reviews throughout the engineering lifecycle. Skills, Character and Experience Proven record of having managed payload design, manufacture and assurance on major satellite communications projects during the design and development phases. Communication payload engineering experience. Management of thirdparty satellite manufacturers and tier 1 subsystem suppliers. Communications payload hardware equipment and onboard software. Some level of involvement in spacecraft security engineering. Appreciation of all Satcom elements including Space, Ground and User segments. Onboard cryptographic equipment. Experience of developing system requirements and subsystem architectural design. Experience of space related testing including acceptance, integration and test. Experience of space related engineering standards, notably the ECSS standards as relevant to the spacecraft. Experience of radiation and hazard analysis of the payload subsystem. Ability to participate and work as an integral part of a highly skilled Satcom Systems Engineering team Proven ability to produce unambiguous but concise technical reports and operational procedures at the detailed level for reporting to Senior Management. Exemplary customerfacing presentational and communicational skills. Essential Requirements Strong spacecraft engineering background. UK Security Cleared or eligible to be SC cleared. 10 years of experience of working in the Satcom sector. 5 years of experience of working in satellite communications payload design and development that includes UHF, Xband and Kaband operations. 5 years of experience in working with major satellite manufacturers, suppliers and equipment providers. Experience of satellite related negotiations. Collaborative team working and working at the boundary between organisations that are pursuing a common goal. Aerospace engineering or equivalent degree and Chartered Engineer. Ability to working under own initiative and across a dispersed and distributed team. Desirable Requirements Experience in leading crosscultural, international teams. Familiarity of MOD guidance KiD and the implementation of this guidance. Familiarity with defence programmes and engineering standards. Working knowledge of the CADMID acquisition life cycle model.
