Flight Software Manager

Flight Software Functional Manager, Job Ref 894 Reports to Head of Electrical 1 OnBoard Data Handling, Flight Software Engineering Services Key Purpose of Job We are looking for a dynamic and motivated manager to lead the Flight Software Team both from a technicaldelivery perspective and also the pastoral care personal development of the team. The Flight Software Team is responsible for all software on the SSTL satellite, from the safety task running on the on board computers, to the embedded software in SSTL equipments. Responsible For Management and leadership the Flight Software team. Key Tasks Work with Business Line Directors and Engineering teams to define Business Line Roadmaps capturing the future capabilitiesproducts the company will need in order to remain competitive in the global market, and the technology required to deliver them. Provide technical input and leadership to bid and proposal activities. Work with Project Managers, Heads of Engineering and other managers, to identify and resolve any resource conflicts or problems before they impact upon project progress. Ensure that the teams current and forward planning of workload is fully scoped and managed. Proactively resolve issues such as resource limitations, potential resource clashes and identify skill gaps for future recruitment activities. Ensure the team have effective plans in place to deliver their work, to the appropriate quality level, within project budget and schedule constraints. Ensure that the team follow best practice in the execution of their work. Ensure team level policies and procedures are in place to allow consistent team output, in line with SSTL approach to Engineering. Ensure the team has the skills required to deliver current and future projects in line with the company strategy and vision, and there is a viable plan in place to retain and develop team members with a particular view to succession planning and single point failures. Develop, train and mentor team members ensuring annual appraisals are completed and personal development plans are in place. Ensure the team keeps up to date with current state of the art through attendance at conferences, training and market research. Undertake software development work as required. Key Skills, Attributes and Experience Excellent people management skills, able to motivate individuals and lead the team. Good interpersonal skills be able to communicate clearly and effectively, and influence and persuade others at all levels of the company. Able to provide regular feedback and hold difficult conversations Ability to delegate work and empower people effectively. Good technical writing and presentation generating and delivering skills. Proven experience in software engineering, particularly for embedded software written in C. Knowledge of good Software Engineering practices and development lifecycle. Use of Embedded Operating Systems. e.g. VxWorks, QNX, RTEMS

Position Reference 084 You will be responsible for the management of activities devoted to the development of platform and payloads products for telecommunications satellites including products and hosted payloads under the responsibility of the Space Segment Section. Tasks and Activities The scope of work will include Support initiation of activities related to products for payload and platform applications including the development of telecom products and hosted payloads ready to gain flight heritage Support establishment and control of relevant ESA requirements, specifications and general documentation Evaluation, support to negotiation, monitoring and control of contracts and activities Support or lead design reviews on contracts between the agency and industry Preparation of inputs to status reports.
