NEMA Business Conditions Indexes rebound in January.

After sizable decline in December, NEMA’s Electroindustry Business Conditions Index for current conditions in North America rebounded in January. Index climbed to 50 from 41.2 the previous month, with an equal share of panelists (41%) reporting that conditions improved and that they deteriorated. Eighteen percent of the panelists stated that the business environment was unchanged. Meanwhile, EBCI for future North American conditions jumped to 67.6 in January from 52.9 in December.

NEMA says CEC should not increase price of LED bulbs.

NEMA called on California Energy Commission to ensure that California consumers have access to the most efficient, cost-effective, and preferred LED bulbs currently on the market. Proposal under consideration at CEC, if approved, will be the first instance in which CEC pursues regulatory action that will reduce potential energy savings, increase cost of energy-saving products for California consumers, and make it less likely that California consumers will want to buy these products.

NEMA supports Supreme Court decision on role of FERC.

NEMA welcomes U.S. Supreme Court determination that the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has the authority to regulate demand response—paying consumers to use less electricity during times of peak demand—in wholesale electricity markets. According to decision, FERC has the authority to regulate demand response at the wholesale level under Section 824 of the Federal Power Act. States have the authority to regulate electricity at the retail level.

NEMA publishes phase-cut dimming standard.

NEMA published NEMA SSL 7A-2015 Phase-Cut Dimming for Solid State Lighting—Basic Compatibility. Standard provides compatibility requirements when forward phase-cut dimmer is combined with one or more dimmable LED light engines (LLEs). An LLE, for purposes of this document, comprises one or more LED modules, LED control gear (integral or remote), and connection to mains circuit. Revision eliminates category differentiation of Type 1 and Type 2 dimmers, and clarifies test condition language.

NEMA Highlights One Retirement and several appointments.

The IAPMO Group announced senior VP and general counsel Neil Bogatz's retirement. As IAPMO consultant, Bogatz will continue to represent IAPMO as chair of ANSI's Executive Standards Council and vice chair of its Intellectual Property Rights Committee (IPRPC). Monte Bogatz assumed senior VP and general counsel role, while Heather Koffman was promoted to VP and associate general counsel. Also, NEMA appointed Tracy Cullen to lead its communications, marketing, and publishing initiatives.
